Crafting and tillering english style rounded belly longbow. I used hazel wood to build this bow. For nocks I used cow horns. The bow draws 60lbs at 30" and it's 71" ntn. Really sweet shooter. I'm not fully satisfied with drawweight and tiller but it's good enough. I was aiming for 100lbs. More videos about this bow coming soon.
I'm really in love with the simplicity of a longbow. Especially finished with lovely cow horns. And what's your opinion guys? How do you like it?

Very nice! Character staves seem to be more common than the perfect straight staves so learning to tiller them is key. Tiller looks good and a fun bow to shoot!

@@DreamcraftBows well, if it works it works. I'd keep my eyes open for compression damage though just in case... For some easy to get European wood that can take deep profiles without problems I'd suggest cornus (dogwood, hartriegel in German). Had very good results with that year's ago, everything from flat as a plank to deep D profiles). Thanks for fixing me on to bowmaking again🙏

That's so interesting. 3 questions...What is the heat treatment for? What was the diameter of the hazel tree you started with? Do you insert an arrow pass? Thanks
@DreamcraftBows
@DreamcraftBows 2 жыл бұрын
Heat treatment improves performance. The diameter was like 3". I glue it on the bow

Beautiful longbow! How does Hazel wood compare to Yew Wood, is the performance about the same? Thanks for sharing!
@DreamcraftBows
@DreamcraftBows 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you my friend! No doubts yew is far better wood for a longbow. Hazel tends to have compression issues

@@DreamcraftBows Correct. But if you don't go for a D shape like you would with an ash longbow, you can make pretty decent hazel longbows. The belly needs to be about 1/4th broader than the back, more like a trapezoid shape. That makes the compressed part stronger.

Awesome bow. What did you use for string and did you paint it with something?

Didn't hazel chrysal on the belly? Mine wrinkled like hell when I tried a D shape cross section instead of inflated rectangle

Just a little bit, I was surprised. Yeah hazel D bows tend to have compression issues

what's the benefit of the two years seasoning?
@DreamcraftBows
@DreamcraftBows 2 жыл бұрын
Some bowyers say that slowly dried wood is better for bowmaking. Two years seasoning let it go slowly
