Two old guys make a hazel longbow in the woods. Bow Making in the Outdoors. What do you do when you are a novice bowyer and someone asks if you will show them how to build a bow? So me and another guy (you may already know him) go into the woods to build a hazel longbow. After a day's work we have a 40lb @ 28" hazel bow - I guess it's little too short to be called a true longbow but the principles are just the same whatever the length.
I'm Mick Grewcock, retired from business and now self-learning the arts of bow- and film-making. Join me in my light-hearted quest for knowledge as I learn to combine the ancient craft of bow-making with the digital videography and film making - I'd be delighted to have you for company on this bizarre journey.
Lots of bow making on my channel - do browse, view, like comment and subscribe. I have videos on making yew, hazel, elm and blackthorn bows as well as many others related to archery and bow making.

Hi mick. Ive been busy doing my own first longbow by watching your videos. Bought a ash stave and all the tools as you had advised in previous episodes, and the results... Well.. Awsome. Created a light 42lb bow. Shoots well. Looks not bad and best of all.its one of a kind. Must say though. Wasn't easy,, but well worth it. Thanks again for all your efforts and support throughout the years. Hope your well and still shooting.

Well done Wayne! Yes, it's kinda dead easy whilst being a struggle at the same time. 42lb is great. Much better to make a bow, than fail to build a heavy bow. Glad that I have helped in a small way. Best, Mick

I was literally planning on making a hazel bow over summer. This is genius. It really took me a while to decide whether he was a guy you shared your clothes with, with the same body type and similar dog, which would have been plausible, but you weren't interacting all that much. Mike's stutterings at some point gave you away, and I could finally decide. You made a lot of editting progress. Congrats

My first attempt at filming myself in this way. Editing is hard but nowhere near as difficult as acting and reacting as if someone is really there. And sometimes I didn't get it right! Anyway, fun to do and much learned. Glad you enjoyed!
@jmfa57

Mick, you've actually outdone yourself this time. How you did this completely escapes me. I had a thoroughly enjoyable view of this on a late Sunday evening, thank you for that! This helps take the sting out of the DISASTER that my poor little 1979 MGB has turned into in the past month and a half. My mechanic gave up. If you happen to know of anyone with an exhaust manifold (sans cracks) for this car that doesn't need it, I'd love to hear from you. As it is now, once he reassembles and buttons it up, I'm going to just garage it until we leave California and move somewhere where there are no annual emissions tests/ But enough of that.. thanks for taking you MASTERFUL videos to the NEXT level! - John
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about your poorly MGB. I wish I knew someone who has what you need. Glad you enjoyed my silliness. Bit of an experiment, difficult to film and edit and to gauge opinion as to whether worth repeating now and then. Contrary to what people assume, most of the magic happens during filming. Each scene in which I appear twice requires two takes; I stay strictly within a portion of the frame for take one and in another portion for take two. The really hard part is 'acting' each scene as if the other me is really there, synchronizing nods and gestures and speech is surprisingly difficult. The fairy dust is added during editing. Each dual scene (or other multiples like two dogs or a third me) is created by making a 'digital sandwich'. Imagine the two slices of bread being my two filmed scenes. The 'filling' is a digital layer called a draw mask. The mask is manipulated manually during editing rendering a portion of the mask as transparent, allowing scene two to be visible 'through' scene one. The knack is to align the transparency with the appropriate portion of the scene. When done correctly, I then appear simultaneously as if in one scene. Around 25 hours later, I end up with a 20 minute video! Have a good week John.

Many thanks, Mick, I will make it a point to have a good week! The bride and I just got off a 12 day cruise from LA to Alaska and back, which allowed me to calm considerably from the pressures of work (you know, work - - curse of the drinking class!) Nice touch that "the three of you" are all sporting Omega Seamasters!

Phil Batey No problem, good luck. Keep an eye on Facebook group Badass Archers. Loads of warbow guys on there and sometimes links to stuff on sake. There is a group called something like longbow trade blanket with stuff for sale. Occasionally Will Sherman in both groups sells self bows (he’s a warbow bowyer and arrowsmith) but the heavy end is usually around £500 plus. Hope you find something.

Fun and educational, all in one! Great craftsmanship - both in editing and bow making. Love the humble approach to the skills you’ve acquired, and the recognition that it took many generations of trial and error to hone them. Not that many years ago, this film would have been the preserve of the big cinema filmmakers! Well done Mick (and Mick) for a great video. Once again, a beautifully filmed sequence. Loved the hazel bow. One question on it if I may? Did you aim to get it curved through the handle, or straight handled, with curve through the limbs.
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 6 жыл бұрын
To be honest Malcolm, I was happy that it just didn’t break during filming! I had no back up stave. Nearly ten hours filming and another twelve editing meant that the bow was little more than a prop. That said, I like bows with a bit of bend in the handle.

Love it! Great one Mick ( and Mick)! Interesting bow, as well. I like the bark back. How did you keep from damaging it as you worked the bow?

Dooley Fussle The beat success retaining the bark has been from winter harvested staves that are fully seasoned first. The bark is sanded during finishing to take the coarse surface down a little and then oiled. Stays on fine. Check out my hazel and blackthorn bow videos - both are bark on. Mick

So cute! The editing was very good, especially for this having been your first crack at this kind of video. Well done, sir! Thanks for the video. Quick question, do you know if Maple is a good wood for bows? I recently was clearing maple saplings out of our lilacs and, because of the unique environment, the trees grow very straight. One of the trees I cut down seems about as big as the hazel stave in this video. What do you think? Thanks for any help you may have.

Never tried maple but I believe it makes a reasonable bow wood. Virtually any tree wood will give you a bow - it's just finding the right design to maximise your chances of it bending properly and surviving. I'm learning very slowly but I have found out how important it is to get the shape of the belly right for the wood being used. Maple is a hard wood so I would go for a flattish belly and slightly rounded sides. Have a try, little to lose and much to gain in knowledge!

Fantastic! There’s a martial arts film with van damme called double impact where it’s filmed to make him have a twin brother and both appear on screen at the same times well your video is so much better done it’s amazing camera work you are such a clever guy you should be a millionaire in Hollywood 👍 And nice bow mick 😁

Not seen that film! Thanks for the positive comment, appreciated. I filmed this in a day with about another day of editing. A few glitches but nothing too serious. Thanks for watching.

I would pay to just walk around the woods as it looks a beautiful woods. Any archery would be a bonus. People say about the woods and forests abroad not realising what we have and when the Bluebell's are out there isn't a Wood's in the world better
