Making a balanced ball crank handle for a Clausing mill

3 жыл бұрынThis is a handle I was missing for my Clausing 8540 horizontal mill.
Mine was missing and the off the shelf handles like for a Bridgeport are too small length wise. What it is for is on the right side of a Clausing 8540 mill there is a rapid traverse manual crank handle. There are 2 gears that move X axis. 1 gear is a 1:1 ratio and the other gear is a 1:4 ratio. the handle slides in and out to change the ratio. A standard mill handle 3" long is fine for the 1:1 ratio, but on the 1:4 ratio it was a bit hard to turn. The handle I made ended up being 5.281 long from center hub to the center of the small ball.

The ball handle turned out great. Never would have thought of using an air gun for polishing in the lathe - really speeds up the job!

It beats a file! Its really a 4 step process. First I free hand rough out the shape with the lathe tools...then grind with a 40 grit disk....then grind with 80 grit....then with 150 grit sand paper.....I could have did a few more steps with finer paper but I thought that was good nuff. Just remember to not move anything until you remove all grinding dust from the ways...the dust will mix with the way lube then get into the ways and keep grinding away every time you move something.
