A little outside of my depth as I don't fancy myself a walleye fisherman, but here's my take on a classic walleye color pattern using bucktail and the Ultra Minnow mold.

That’ll work for sure!! I tie the same head also use the flathead jig mold too. It isn’t too big either. I’ll be throwing 3/4 and 1 ounce flathead jigs for walleye here on the Mississippi this week. One thing you will want though is a treble hook stinger off the back. A size 10 or 12 is what I use. A lot of time they will swipe or short strike the jigs, and the stinger will up your catch rate tremendously. I always just let the current, wind and depth dictate what size jig I need. Also don’t be shy with hook size either. 12 inch walleye will engulf a 3/4 ounce with a 4/0 hook all the time.

Thanks Lazur! Good call on the stinger for sure. Appreciate the feedback man!

Oh yeah it'll catch. A little bright orange on the head belly would only help. They see green and orange best and they love that purple. We catch plenty in Spring on Erie with purple hair jigs with big black/white eyes. Jigs with no eyes get hit less.

Love it! I know so little about walleye, I’ll keep the orange in mind! Thanks for the comment and for watching!

Yes, the eyes say yum yum! The peacock herl def finished it off very well, Nice job. FTR, I might mention - - I realize Sally Hansen is to finger nail polish that Band Aid to bandages. But, Sally’s HAN is typically prox $3.5 for .47 oz. whereas Dollar Tree’s Diamond Dry .44 oz or LA Colors Rapid Dry Topcoat .47 oz are both only $1.25. I’ve tested both latter brands seeing no difference in quality.

Walleye or not, that is outstanding!!! 👏🏻 Not a walleye expert but I’ve definitely caught em and I’d for sure try that in the northern lakes for the bigger Eyes… IF you could keep the Northerns off of it long enough! Down here, I see it as a striper magnet too! Like how u shared the decisions and turning points with us along the way… it seems often, the best ones are build-as-u-go, IMO anyway. Peacock was definitely a great addition! Love it in the tank!! 🥇

Thanks man! Was a pleasure walking through the decisions on camera. It’s cool when rough sketches develop and the end result turn out nice. Very satisfying! Those same tailwaters are also home to hybrids/wipers… wouldn’t hurt my feelings if one of them took a shot, in the event the walleyes pass. LOL!

Great tie and vid....loved listening to you think it through. That was a terrific addition. Maybe we should see more from The Tying Lab. ;) oh, and those lateral feathers.....a definite NO. 👍

Perhaps a live stream from the lab sometime - you guys can help me develop it as we go, that sounds like a blast! Thanks Rob! Glad you agree about the lateral feathers too 👊👊.

Typical walleye jigs size depends on water depth and current. Rarely do I go above 3/8oz, some deeper waters might go up to a 1/2oz out of necessity. Standard is 1/8oz in spring to keep a slow moving bait, then moving on to 3/16 or 1/4oz. I almost strictly fish Walleye and Sauger in my area of Wi.

Adam that jig is awesome. I will say speaking from experience that those feathers make the jig they will not last long due to the teeth on a walleye or sauger. I have tied many walleye/sauger jigs and when you factor in the cost of those feathers to me it isn't worth it. After testing my jigs in a tank and actual field testing them, buck tail is hard to beat. Also, faux buck tail is really good because it is tough as nails and will hold up to short strikes and those teeth! Other then that, that jig is a master piece. Well done.

That would definitely crack some walleye in the Detroit river. I tie a similar pattern but not as fancy because it’s very common to snag and break the jig off. Hair, flash and a stinger tied in is plenty. Thanks for sharing 😃🎣🐟

Yup, this was… we’ll say… unconventional :). For some reason I thought those Bugger packs were like $10 each but looking back that wasn’t the case… more like $25. Super awesome feathers though! I think my two packages were Christmas presents so I didn’t feel it quite so bad, LOL! Thanks, as always, Dan! And great job on JigSquad the other night, it was a pleasure watching the show!

Curious as to your thinking regarding the paint pattern on the jig head. Fish generally are counter-shaded - being darker on their backs than their bellies. Yet the head in the video is contrary to this. Reason(s) for your choice?
@SDGCustomLurecraft
@SDGCustomLurecraft 11 ай бұрын
A good observation, thanks! Honestly, no other reason besides the fact I wanted a predominantly chartreuse head and purple on the top may have run the risk of covering too much. To your point, this one could have been accomplished without the purple, or with the purple on top. Thanks for watching!
