Making a Blackwater Betta Aquarium

I've been talking about it for awhile now and here it is, my betta's new blackwater aquarium! Like I said in the video, at this current time the water is hardly tinted at all. So you could argue that it's not even a blackwater setup, but it does use all of the elements of a typical blackwater setup. That said, I will definitely tint the water more as time goes on.
With this one I really wanted to make something that I knew the betta would like and benefit from. That's largely why I added the botanicals in the first place. They not only look cool and natural, but are really beneficial, especially to bettas. Bettas have delicate fins and if damaged can be easily infected. Leaf litter and other natural goodies will actually help combat this and most likely make it a non-issue. I honestly would like to see this become the standard with bettas because I know I've had issues with it in the past.
I also think that people are finally warming up to tannins, which is great. I was very much a part of the camp who thought tannins made your tank look dirty and undesirable. I used to waste so much money on carbon and do relentless water changes just to remove them. I also used to dislike the aesthetic of leaf litter in vivariums. My perspective on both has changed though and I think that fishkeepers at large are really starting to warm up to them, which is great to see.
Anyways, hopefully you enjoy this setup as much as betta does!
Btw, in case you're wondering where I got the botanicals, check out the links below:

Not quite the same but I was able to purchase $1,500 worth of tanks (including a nice 160 gallon) from a coworker who was sick of having them sitting around doing nothing. You would be surprised if you just start talking about fish tanks to random people how many have similar situations. They will often gladly take a few bucks up front as long as you haul it away that day and give them their space back.

The tank at 5.50ish when he's refilling the water there seems to be a hole near the bottom of the divider, is this a defect or part of the design as I'm sure the intake is meant to be at the top grills and a pump on the bottom pulling the water through the filter then pushing it back into the tank above. Or is this hole part of the design to begin with? just strange seeing it.

That intro was hysterical; definitely do consider adding more periodic, unexpected humor like that into your videos if ever you feel inspired to, it was great. RIP Gary, you'll slither on in our hearts. :( Fantastic find on the tank, btw! Way back when my dad was alive and well enough to work, he was a dumptruck driver and would come up with a bunch of really interesting stuff that people threw out for seemingly no reason. The biggest staple out of all of them was a perfectly intact Atari 2600 complete with all the cords and controllers and even a cleaning kit and up to.... 7 game cartridges, two of which were paks with multiple games. That thing lasted us for a long while and I have a lot of fond memories with it. Unfortunately, in the midst of moving a couple times and time rolling on, we lost the Atari. Probably sold off by mom and dad during really poor times. But heck, there had been other stuff-- like a fully working Beta Casette player, a couch that needed nothing more than the pillows to be replaced, lamps and chairs-- it was a very useful job for a man in a poor family. You never know what kind of perfectly good stuff people will throw out. That's why if I think something still works or could give someone some kind of joy, I don't just toss it out. I take it to the dump's Swap Shop, which always has people poking around (including myself).
@chomperthebadger9866
@chomperthebadger9866 5 жыл бұрын
"Dump Swap Shop" I've never heard of those before. Sounds awesome! I HATE tossing out stuff that still has life to it. Got a garage loaded with stuff that isn't accepted at the Goodwill. Going to have to see if any place near here has something like that.
@TheBandkanon
@TheBandkanon 5 жыл бұрын
@@chomperthebadger9866 I honestly don't know about any other state, but In pretty much any county of Massachusetts there's a swap shop in the local dump-- all you need is a year-long dump ticket (or you could just pay up-front whenever you visit) and whatever you need to discard on hand. No money required for purchasing items! It's a first-come first-serve just-take-it-and-go deal and the biggest bargain you could ever encounter. (The china tea set I got last month may not be genuine but it's still really nice!) I also have departed from quite a few old belongings there too, one of which was a nice old credenza that -- as soon as I turned around and started heading back to the car-- someone INSTANTLY grabbed and threw into their van! So I know for a fact that one is happily continuing its life under a different owner, lol
@onewingedfallendemo1
@onewingedfallendemo1 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry that I'm commenting on an old thread, but usually if we have something we have replaced but want to toss, we'll set it by the road. I've set out multiple chairs and desks, miscellaneous shelves that I've replaced with something 'better,' and leaving it by the road tends to let people know they can have it. I usually add a big sign that says 'FREE', just to be safe, but I've put stuff out and in less than an hour, passerbys have picked it all up for their own houses. It's easy that way, and it's free for those in need.

That tank was a great find and looks amazing. I was at my lfs and came across a Betta that was laying on its side in a cup where the water had all but evaporated. It was a horrible representation of a Betta honestly which was probably why it had been there long enough for the water to disappear. I felt sorry for him and decided to buy him to see if I could get him to survive. I put him in my 20 long which was originally my quarantine tank. It’s planted and had been setup for months without any fish. The first week or so I wasn’t sure he’d make it but then he started to show signs of recovery. His fins grew back and he got more active. Originally I thought that he had to be the ugliest Betta I had ever seen lol but he has really grown on me. It’s comical to watch him flare at the nerite snails I’ve added and I guess I’ll have to pickup a new tank for quarantine because the 20 has become his home. Great video as always

Boiling and soaking the botanicals less would help with the black water look. You want to preserve tannins as much as possible. I actually soak my botanicals in a bucket of water intended for water changes. After a couple days, most of the botanicals sink and you end up with a bucket of black water (which may be diluted with more water).

I kept and bred bettas for a long while. They are hardly little buggers and will tolerate well, but not necessarily enjoy, water conditions that are less than ideal. If you follow basic aquarium advice that you can get anywhere they'll be fine but remember... No more than one male, no more than a few females, no other fish that are small enough to bully and no other fish that will nibble their fins. Better no other fish at all really. That's pretty much all you need to know.

Ya gonna need pure cyano acrylate if you want to use glue in a fishtank. Well pure, I recommend gel form, but with no such thing as mold inhibitors or stuff they commonly put in glue. Then it's completely safe. Would recommend using it on dry surfaces rather than wet, as it hardens really quick around water.

that’s mostly a myth, 90% of the time, the only high jumping bettas are wild type. the other 10% is just short finned females, bettas with long fins have trouble jumping.

@Thyme Feral Yes, the only tendency bettas might jump if the water is in bad quality, if he feels isolated or threatened by another fish or sees another betta on another aquarium.

I've seen bettas jump for all sorts of reasons (sometimes they're just bored and want to explore more), and even the old man I have could jump that high if he really wanted to.

@@jarongittinger not all bettas are the same; many rarely jump and some will never jump, maybe this guy will never jump in his life, but I wouldn't risk it because my betta would jump if there was a fly above the water

Long finned betta not, but wildtype bettas and females sure can jump a lot higher. So I get the confusion.

Awww, my first Betta was named Dragon!! He has always been very special to me, even though he only lived about 5-6 years (I was 14 when I got him and he died a few months after I turned 20; I’m currently 34). I’d had a few Bettas since then who loved my 80 gallon community tank (mostly females with one male) but still, Dragon will forever hold a special place in my heart. Seeing the Serpa Setup Betta tank here, and especially with your driftwood resembling a dragon...aw man, I have to admit, my heart is breaking a bit for my fallen former fishy friend!! Maybe sounds stupid, but I think some of you might understand. Aqua-nerds unite!!

I have the same tank, also planted and with similar hard scape. A few things I learned: 1. the hardscape inhibits the flow around the tank so the far end of the narrow tank ends up collecting debris and as a result, it needs to be cleaned far more frequently than I would like. 2. The filter/separation itself needs to be modified. There are holes on the inside that need to be filled with silicone (down low on the wall) and the slats up high are too big. That will cause your betta's fins to get sucked into the intake. I glued plastic craft fabric over mine and it solved that problem, no issue. 3. outflow, the outflow if left without being modified creates too much force in such a small tank and it pushes everything to the other end in a J- shape where it essentially pools up. You can change this with a small circulation fan. I got a little magnetic one-off Wish for 'free.' 4. watch out for cracks developing on the top edges! My first tank developed cracks at some point along the top edges (near the corners). It was never dropped (as far as I know) and it looked okay, so I'm not sure when that happened. 5. the lighting that comes with the tank is too strong for the size of the tank and INHO, causes too many issues. I solved that by covering up about a third of them with a little black paper cut to fit under the light. The algae problem reduced at that point, and my CO2 system also made up the difference. and that brings me to 6. CO2 systems. I use DIY, and I found that this one was tough to DIY co2 due to how I would normally run the line into the filter outlet. In this tank, its too strong, even when turned down, and causes too much current. To change that, I ran a line down the backside of my hardscape to hide the glass bell style diffuser. It is then set up near the bottom of the outtake. It does get pushed that direction, but it reaches the lower part of the tank rather than being rocketed across the tank, hitting the end and bursting at the surface there rather than diffusing. The DIY I'm using is also off wish (and works well!) Its the reactor chamber kit with the pressure gauge. The total cost of my set up (including buying the tank off craigslist) came to $112... for a betta that I swear isn't worth his freebie price tag. *sigh* For the love of fish!

I also have a driftwood monster! Beautiful scape as always. For my blackwater tank I brew peat in a drip style coffee maker. I use half a cup of (horticultural) peat in a 12-cup machine and brew it four times, which gives me a pH of 5. I use this straight for my water changes because I have chocolate gouramis which need the low pH. But for a betta I would just brew it once and add some to my tap water to tint the water and lower the pH a little. I never boil leaves before using them, though I do clean them in cold water before use to remove dust and dirt. My gouramis enjoy playing in the floating leaves for a few days :-)
