Man this is a gorgeous piece of furniture. I've been looking at many blanket chests trying to find the one I like most to make for our blanket overload, and this one takes the cake.

I’ve been looking for a cedar chest idea to make for a good friend of mine and yours is the clear winner. I’m just going to substitute dovetails for the box joints. The hinges you used are an awesome idea. Excellent video and a beautiful piece of work sir.

Awesome result. I was starting to think it wasn't possible for anyone on KZfaq to create anything nice without a SawStop, Festool dominoe jointer, and a Rubio finish. Nice to see someone getting it done with the same caliber of tools most of us use.

Funny you mention that. As I was watching the video, it occurred to me that I own some of the exact same tools - the Bosch Table saw and the Rikon bandsaw. Not to say I don't enjoy videos with fancy workshops as well, but this is much more relatable for me. No more excuses for me!

This was one of the things that drew me in. I do have some nicer tools but far from a SawStop or Domino. This looks like something I can actually build.

Great video and build! I came across your channel yesterday on the Wen v Dewalt planers and loved your approach, so subbed and am enjoying some of your other works. I use a lot of WRC and eastern red cedar and found that GoodFilla wood putty in red oak is a great match. Sometimes I’ll add some of the dust flour as well. Keep up the great channel - thanks!

Pls, wouldn’t dowels provide greater vertical and horizontal panel strength?
@jkmwoodworking
@jkmwoodworking 29 күн бұрын
Yes, i think that dowels would provide more strength. although the box joints are probably stronger than the wood itself. I've seen dowels used on these types of chests, although I think it is mostly just to add some design details, perhaps a personal taste choice.

I love working aromatic red cedar. Your project looks great but you will have long term issues with the cross grain bread-board ends on the lid. I've also had long term issues with the Deft lacquer flaking off.
@jkmwoodworking
@jkmwoodworking 11 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yeah its risky to glue up to the end grain on the lid the way i did. I did spend some time carefully sizing the end grain with glue first, hopefully that will help some. Likely I should have used dowels or biscuits. I did a similar design chest about 25 years ago, and it is still holding together good with no joint separation, perhaps just lucky. I've not had any experience of Deft flaking off, good to know, I'll look out for it. Thanks for the great comment!

Out of curiosity, how man board feet did you get to build this? Looking at doing one myself for my wife.
@jkmwoodworking
@jkmwoodworking 3 ай бұрын
Great question, and unfortunately I wasn't able to find my notes of how much I used. I do remember that I had to go back to the wood store and get more than I originally planned, because there were so many splits and knots that I had to work around. Usually, I calculate the total area of the finished piece, and then add 15% for waste to calculate how much wood to buy. But for this aromatic red cedar, I would suggest maybe 30% waste.

Thanks! It is 36" x 18", which a bit smaller than an average cedar chest, but I like the smaller size. The main box is 16" deep + 2 1/4" lid height, and the legs raise it up about 1 1/2", so total height of almost 20"

Gorgeous chest! One question: how did you get that much cedar without acquiring a 2nd mortgage? Did you have to go see a Good Fella and he made you an offer you couldnt refuse? Cedar has become ridiculously expensive but i still love it.
@jkmwoodworking
@jkmwoodworking 7 ай бұрын
Thanks! Haha... no Good Fella required.. it cost about $200 for the wood for this chest, yes, kind of expensive. I think I paid around $7 bd-ft, but can't remember exactly. It was less than I pay for hardwood that I usually use on projects, so I was thankful for that.
