DIY build of a traditional hand cut joinery wooden chest inspired by the Witcher fantasy series.
I’m a huge fan of the Witcher series, so when I came across a reference to Geralt’s wooden alchemy/potion/travel chest, I knew I had to make it!
In Andrzej Sapkowski, The Last Wish, as Geralt is preparing to battle the Striga -
“The witcher returned to the dusty table at which he was preparing, calmly and meticulously. He knew he had plenty of time. The striga would not leave her crypt before midnight. On the table in front of him he had a small chest with metal fittings. He opened it. Inside, packed tightly in compartments lined with dried grass, stood small vials of dark glass. The witcher removed three."
If you’ve never heard of the Witcher series, basically it’s set in a medieval fantasy world, with your usual array of humans, elves, dwarves, magic and monsters.
Witcher’s, are professional monster hunters, who travel from village to village to solve monster related issues for money. This chest would be used to hold alchemy tools and potions and what not.

I used to be able to do work like this, back before Diabetic Nephropathy stole the feeling in my hands and feet. Worse, I have over a hundred plastic models still in their factory sealed boxes that I can no longer build. You hit 70, you have all this neat stuff and mother nature steals your ability to do much of anything. I even have seven books half or more written that I am no longer able to complete. People, make the beautiful things while you can, because one day you will wake up to discover that you no longer have the dexterity to do so. Battle on!

This is a superb wood working book I`ve ever read, t.co/oLg9l5gL3F . Both novice and some skilled woodworker can gain a lot of general info using this reading material. I`ve been very amazed how frequently I use this to look up woods at places like to restore and salvage spots.?

I used to write in the Futhark alphabet as a kid. Or rather a variation of my own creation as a code. I love the text on the face. "evil is evil lesser greater..." and although I couldn't read the last word from the video I can only assume it to be the famous quote from the novels..."Evil is evil, greater, lesser, middling, it makes no difference. The degree's arbitrary, the definition's blurred. If I'm to choose between one evil and another, I'd rather not choose at all."

Very nice. I made a round top chest for my girl friend. I enjoy doing all the engraving with a router attachment on my dremel. I printout on paper my design then use clear packing tape across the whole design. then use a ball point pen and firmly trace it into the wood remove the paper and go over it in pencil to make it easier to see. I make my hinges out of wood. I even make wooden pad locks and keys, hasps, pegs instead of nails. In the end your project takes on a more primitive or rustic man handled look. I learned how to build a small foundry on KZfaq and I'm messing around with making metal accessories for my projects. I'm finding that to be more challenging than I thought, any way that's a great chest. and the Witcher 3 The Wild Hunt is by far the best video game I've played. Happy and prosperous New Year

Another method for the lid is to make it as one with the box. That is to say, you cannot get inside. Then once complete, you place the box on it's side with the bottom against the fence of the table saw. Cut along each side and end and the lid comes away. This method makes for a perfect fit.

I love this and I want to make one my self. all I need is the tools that I still do not have. By the way you made one big mistake ,never use nails in a piece of furniture that is made of wood always use either wooden pegs or wood screws because in furniture nails will at some point rip the wood apart and then it will have to be fixed or even that part taken out and replaced. Where as wooden pegs ( which are the best to use ) or wood screws ( only if you must use them ) will last a life time and beyond . So if you wish you can hand it down to your children when the time comes. Thank you for the video

Great Work! I love your toys. I made a chest for my son when he was younger and the decoration was beating it with a chain, running a rip saw across it and some drumming with round sticks. Of course that was done before cutting the top off for the lid. After lots of sanding, I used a walnut stain and spray lacquer. It turned out great. I would like to see this chest made with a vintage look. The designs would be amazing aged .

That came out awesome. In the future, when you cut out the square holes and joints... Make the outsides of the holes a slight bit bigger, tapering in. In the same direction that you taper the square holes, cut a thin slot in the square pins. Now you can hammer a "wedge" into the slot to expand the square pins to fill the expanded square holes. That secures them in place and makes it impossible for the square pegs to pull-out. (The same thing they do to a hammer or an axe, to secure the head onto a handle.) If you watch the video where you hammer the leather strap onto the side, you can see the side pop off the square pins, which you had glued into place. If they were wedge-fastened, that wall would not have budged when you hammered against it. In your case, since it is just to support the shelf, it isn't a big problem. However, it would have given you additional support the the dove-tail joints would not offer, in that width-wise direction. P.S. Leaving the joints protruding was a good idea. Besides looking cool, it also explains why there is no artwork on them. If they were flush, it would look like it was an afterthought to the art, as the artwork would be expected to also have been "burned" over those flat spots too.

Thank you for rescuing that Remu, that chest is PRICELESS, considering you cannot get Remu anymore unless it's recycled like what you did, it's illegal to cut the trees down for timber UNLESS the tree is old, and a risk to keep it up. You have a one of a kind chest. Basically if you had enough Remu wood to say, build a small shack, you could sell it and buy a house.

Absolutely brilliant, young man. I'm glad to see you used old school and new technology to build this box. It was inspiring. When I built my 1st piece of furniture, more than 40 yrs ago, I had a Craftsman skill saw and drill. But I also had my grandfather's tool kit. Took me 3 months to build a cedar lined hope chest for my wife-to-be. It includes about 40 square nails my great grandfather made while be was building houses. My daughter now has that chest. You kids now have those computer controlled cutters to inscribe. I would challenge you to leave it alone, and use your chisels, hammer, and a wood burner. It might not be perfect, but it'll have old world charm and character. And, you'll have another skill set. I wish you well, and hope you have a long career. You're well on your way.
