Making a Chroma Cube from Epoxy Resin with Dichroic Film | As seen in Guardians of the Galaxy

Dichroic window film has a magical coating that transmits and reflects light of different colours. For this project I use a dichroic film that transmits blue and pink but reflects gold, enabling it to create a spectacular, colourful optical effect.
This optical effect is used by renowned artist Jack Storms to create shimmering cubes of crystal, one of which was commissioned to appear in the broker scene of Guardians of the Galaxy, and took 6 months to complete!
My version was much quicker (and cheaper!) but the end result still looks amazing.

Your ice cube joke was cute... Can I ask what product you used to make the molds? Also which resin did you use. I made something that had 6 layers and all the layers were visible when cured.

Hi, I use this moulding silicone ebay.us/1iyRxK and resin from www.resin4art.com there will always be feint witness lines between layers of resin, but the less time between each pour, the less noticeable they are 😎♠

Hi thanks for watching, I just tried it but the dichroic film is not UV reactive. It looks best with as much light hitting it from as many different directions as possible 😎♠

How beautiful! I was literally thinking of making one of these a few days ago... I wonder how it would look with a light underneath it?

Very strange, me too. Was trying to explain to someone and this vid was exactly the technique i was talking about. Another artist was doing lead glass the same way.

Thanks 😊The thing about dichroic film is that if you hit it with light from the front it will reflect solid gold, like a mirror, but from any other angle it will be transparent blue or pink (or whatever film you use, it comes in different colour variations). So for the best effect, you need to hit it with light from different angles at the same time. For my reveal shot I was using 4 lamps 😎♠

The video is very good to understand and easy on the eyes. The technique is really good and the cube is mesmerising!! 😍 You have a lot of talent! I make small things and I know it looks more easy than it is. For future videos maybe something fidgety? And lots of sparkly and rainbow colouring 😄
