In this collaboration with Quinn Dunki from the Blondihacks channel, I show how to make a copper water tank with brass legs, and a closely-fitted lid. Quinn will use this as part of a steam plant she is building to power her recent steam engine project. Here's the link to Quinn's video that features this tank: • Let's Build a Boiler F...

I'm watching this video since it was recommended to me (KZfaq recommendations got one right!!), and I'm only at just over 9 minutes in and I have to keep myself from going - "wait, that's not going to work" because I'm thinking in pressure vessels - I keep forgetting that this is a tank that will only hold water, not pressure. So the construction is perfect for that, but I'm so used to seeing copper used for the boilers in these steam setups that I see it and think 'pressure'. I'm gonna finish the video now, but I wanted to say I like it and will find more to watch. :)

@Broadpaw_Fox
@Broadpaw_Fox Жыл бұрын
@Ron Covell - yeah,bi worked in a shop rhat huilt oil/gas/water separators for the oil industry. Pressure vessels are no joke, which is why there's a limit in size on what's considered 'hobby'. But you can learn a lot by watching people building projects like Quinn and others - definitely enough to know where to go to learn more if you wanted. 😀 I've just watched a few boiler builds recently, and those have to be built just like big pressure vessels if you don't want to find yourself covered in hot steam suddenly. Needs slightly thicker material and no welds, for a couple points (with copper hobby boilers). 😀 Thankfully I knew what you're doing, but my danger sense kept twinging because copper.

@@RonCovell thanks for the reply. I have used them in all the scenarios in your other video. As a well aged veteran of the trade, the early days we only had tin snips or gilbows, and brute force. With the invention of the new snips I always felt the intention was to use them as per the finger moldings. This took about 10 minutes to realise how pointless they are. Also saved a lot of time on heavier gauge sheet, not having to go back and forth to the bench knife. Every time I have seen people use them on KZfaq video they always hold them in the "correct orientation " and struggle with them. Thanks again.
@RonCovell
@RonCovell Жыл бұрын
For the record, I have tried the Gilbow snips. My hands aren't large enough to work them very well, and they take a LOT of force to cut with, since they do not have a leverage multiplying linkage system.

Hey, that's great news, Steve! Be sure to send me pictures as you move forward. That aluminum backer bar for the welding would have worked a LOT better if I'd taken the time to make hold-downs on both ends of the copper, and the .040-inch gap helped me to get more consistent penetration with the weld. I need to pay closer attention ... I thought I was clicking on Blondihacks to see a copper spinning video. Oops. Looking at the tank I was reminded of one of my first jobs where we made three-piece wheels from flat aluminum stock. I was thinking the tank would be formed on the lathe over some plugs, then the two halves welded together. Wrong again. It is okay to be wrong. What a pleasure seeing you do this in an entirely different manner with a nearly identical outcome. Great video, even without the Blondihacks humor we have all come to know and love.

As someone who has no talent with any kind of craft or handiwork whatsoever, it's always fun to watch a master craftsman at work! It's also very amusing to see something that myself would not have any idea how to tackle, done with tools and/or techniques that look so simple and obvious in hindsight even for a pleb like me lol. Very well done video too, I think I have another channel to watch before bedtime in addition to Blondihacks. :)

Again, I love how you sometimes demonstrate different methods and techniques for accomplishing the same results. KZfaq's recommended Quinn's videos to me before, but your endorsement and description of her content carries a lot more weight, so I suspect she's about to get a new subscriber.
