Hi mat, As an experienced luthier I really enjoyed watching this series but also expected major issues while going on. Good woodworking and good design taste - some good and some not so good ideas ;-) But I have to say that you missed the goal (or will miss) on the 2 most important things in guitar building: Sound and playability. As always one mistake leads to the other. Here are some of yours, leading to the actual problem(s) 1. never use a bowed or twisted piece of lumber for a neck. When planing and/or laminating a neck wait a couple of days for to see whats happening. Check the orientation of your carbon rods. Do you want them to control sidemovement or up n down movement? 2. your fretboard is way to thin. The fb is an important part to strengthen the neck. 3. you‘ve cut the slots all the way through the fretboard wich will lead not only to a loss of sustain but also to a „weak neck“ 4. fretslots have to match your frettang size. If not it will lead to either a upbow or downbow tendency. 5. always check your trussrods before installement! 6. never turn a trussrod more than half a turn. The wood needs time to react. And so on... ;-) But the overall look of the instrument is amazing! My suggestion: Remove the fretboard with heat. Remove the broken trussrod Wait some time, give the neck time to set. Clue on a thicker fretboard. Check if your bridge is still high enough! Otherwise you have to plane down your neck a couple of mills before clueing on the fb. Do this and you re good to go. Have fun.

I watched every episode today and I loved everything about it. From the way you shot it, edited it to the sound and feel of it all. I loved your quirky mishaps and the way you involved your significant other. You sir are a craftsman of both wood and video. You have inspired me to make my own bass and hopefully it turns out a tenth of as amazing as yours has. Thanks so much for this series and I hope to see more of your amazing builds soon. You gained another dedicated subscriber today. Keep up the great work Matt!

you need longer strings with tapered ball ends, which means you didn't need to file the bridge and you needed to file the nut some more for the proper string gauge to fit in

Matt, I think you need a set of strings that is made longer for an extended range/fanned fret instrument. The thinner section of the B string should not be over the playing area of the fret.

Get a steam iron, a dishcloth and a putty knife with a sharp edge. With a lot of patience you can melt the glue and take the fretboard off.

Replacing a thruss rod is not a big deal, Matt! Clothinng iron, thermometer and a seam separation knife (or a couple at least), you will not even lose your fingerboard or frets. However, I would do that before doing any fret work.

it also may be possible like some guitar to pull out the truss rod just make sure the neck is straight enough so that it slip out, you can help it be straight by bowing it in the direction you want.

They are called string ferrules :). Also, I would go about them the other way around :) - first drill the two outside from the other side of the body completely thru (the other holes drill halfway), then with a devider and a straight edge mark out the positions on the back and first go with the wide ferrule size so it goes into the awl guide, then you can use the smaller size to meet the two holes ... makes for straighter and cleaner string thrus :)

Matt, regarding the sheared truss rod adjustment rod...I was given a Steinberger Synapse some years ago and later I found out why it was freely given to me. It was because the same thing happened and the adjustment nut was missing. So what I did was to get a replacement nut about from Fender. Now, if there are at least about 1/4 inch of the attachment still exposed, you can hollow out the nut and epoxy or JB Weld. JB "Quick Weld" did not work as well for me so I just went with plain epoxy and it turns the rod nicely....give it ago. Cause things like that would keep me up all night.

Good job - hoping the busted truss rod doesn't bite back... For the crowning I'd recommend a three corner crowning file which Crimson also make - I use that and the fret end dressing file after the file and a levelling beam
@Furtheronmusic
@Furtheronmusic 6 жыл бұрын
Oh btw - look up Dan Erlewine fixing a bowed neck. You could have slackened off the trussrods then via some clamps and blocks introduced a bow in the "good" direction. Then whilst held by the clamps tighten the truss rod essentially to hold it in the position. Then you can remove the clamps and then "relax" the neck back to where you want it. BTW - I've never tried that! But I'm assured it works

When adjusting your truss rod you need to let the neck rest after every turn. Most people I know do a half or whole turn then let the neck rest for an hour before doing another half or whole turn.

Hi Matt - I gotta hand it to you, with limited guitar building experience to tackle a six string bass and added to that a fan fret, you really gave yourself a task. Cutting fret positions freehand is not the most accurate cos you could be on or either side of the line and intonation could be a real problem. I'm not so sure about those cutouts particularly in the thru' neck area as combined with the shaping at the back of the neck heel there really isn't much cross section left which kind of defeats the object of the thru' neck construction in the 1st place. It's a shame your truss rod snapped but I'm afraid when I watched you adjusting it and heard it groning I was waiting for that to happen. You have introduced so much reverse tension in the fretboard by having too fine a saw cut and with all those frets , in Ebony, it was bound to happen. You may have gotten away had it been rosewood but ebony does not give. If you had fretted the board before you glued it down you would have known as it would have been like a banana. You could try removing some of the mid point frets and recutting the slots to relieve that tension but in reality they are probably all a bit tight. Why don't you use some heat and a pallet knife to slip that board off so you can replace the trussrod, then you will see the fretboard in its free state and you can tackle it with ease. You have put so much work into this instrument that it would be a shame not to get it spot on. I take my hat off to you for being so adventurous. Keep up the good work. - Dave

Arrrgh! The reason that truss rod broke was the collective mass and rigidity of the 2cm x 25cm rectangular CARBON FIBRE rods in there. We might use less than half that in a double bass, with no truss rod and a LOT more tension on the neck...a. lot. STILL - A fantastic series worth it's weight in gold for all the extra tool tips and how to's. I have been blown away and have learned so much about tools.

I've been enjoying this series. You still may have high frets, you really should use a fret rocker to check each one with their adjacent frets after initial filing. Also the sharpie trick and a triangle fret crowning file works wonders. Bummer about that truss rod though.

I’ve been enjoying this series a lot. Very creative woodworking, however I have to say that this bass won’t likely be very playable for a number of reasons. That second truss rod is there because of how wide that board is, you need both to stop the neck from twisting. You can make up for slight twisting by leveling the frets so leveling the frets prior to that was a bit pointless because you’ll have to do it again. And when setting up a guitar, you should have all the strings on and the neck adjusted before doing anything else. Nut height and saddle height will change based on the amount of neck relief. I also wouldn’t recommend filing down the saddles because you decrease the break angle behind the saddle which will effect tuning stability and cause the string to rattle around (I’ve made this exact mistake before). Sorry to lay in to you like that but just thought I’d let you know some things from my experience to help you out. Keep at it, each guitar gets better than the last one.

Thank you for the pointers Alex, I’ll keep those in mind and see how it goes! Fortunately, I don’t play gigs anymore and my ear isn’t good enough to hear any small flaws with tuning. As for the fretboard twist.... we’ll see how that works out!

First, always help the neck with your hands when adjusting a truss rod. 2nd, use a fret rocker 3rd, use a sharpie type marker to know if you have effciently leveled the frets. Anyway, thanks for the series, the basse is magnificent. P.S. You should have unglued the fretboard, the truss rod might rattle inside the neck...

8:26. You installed the strings like a guitar player would, lol. This is a BASS. The cut end of the string needs to go inside the tuner hole at the bottom of the tuning peg, then you wrap it around the peg using the slot. And you need super long strings...your B string is waaaay too short. This will obviously make you cut the nut wrong.
