The exercise I do for sweater construction is more arithmetic than math (I’d say) but I do agree with you about the practical application being much more fun. It wasn’t until I went to college that I learned that a-squared (I can’t write it as an exponent here) WAS AN ACTUAL SQUARE. Euclid’s proofs and the steady logical accumulated construction of truths were astonishing! Why don’t they teach that in kindergarten? Then I went to work at Laura Ashley, calculating how much fabric you’d need for a round tablecloth and how much more you’d need for a ruffle (pi x diameter times 2 for a double ruffle). That’s why, I think, when I decided to make up my own sweater, I didn’t know it was a hard thing to do. I started with the gauge I liked instead of trying to fit inside someone else’s idea of what I should be creating. So much easier. And for the record, Arne HATES sizing out patterns. He gets the Rowan people to do it for him, I think. It takes all the fun out of creating for him.

Yes, both Arne and Carlos made it very clear when they were here that creating a design and pattern writing and technical editing were all different jobs (skills).

I thoroughly enjoyed the episode! I love watching y'all! It is wonderful to watch your enthusiastic banter and I always learn something new. Today it was the tip about the ribbing technique. I prefer ribbing that does not decrease the girth of the sweater. I love it when it just falls straight. I usually go up a needle size, but some yarns look messy using this technique. I have used twisted rib before to help with this, but I never thought about an increase in stitches for the ribbing! Now I can have a neat robust ribbing and have it lay flat. Yay! I loved seeing your projects. You are giving me confidence to customize a sweater! Thank you for the wonderful videos and I also love seeing the sheep!

Loved the show Ladies….. I’m so enjoying Amy Herzog’s book, as up to now, i have viewd patterns as “inspirations”. My favorite way to knit was to see a garment and know how I’d modify it; find a yarn; swatch, and then use my measurements to knit and create. I suppose because I’ve been “crafting” my own clothes all my life, I have the confidence to do the same with knitting. I would encourage any newer knitters to utilize their sewing skills to understand and make their own patterns. Like Betsy and Kim said, it’s not necessary to become a pattern designer, but allows one to modify designs, as well as “make it your own” on a commercial favorite garment. My personal advice on all of this is that the swatch and stitches per inch (cm) is one of the most important parts of the process. Otherwise, just stay in the flow and enjoy! Thanks for all the great ideas! Looking forward to meeting “in person” all of you at the PEI yarn festival.

It is really amazing when you learn to deign sweaters for yourself. I took Amy’s design to fit class on craftsy years ago and now I do my own pattern sizing. I have Amy’s book you mentioned and I have great information in strange brew as well. Ann Budd has lots of design charts as well. It’s all a game changer. The one thing I learned about myself is that my gauge loosens while I knit the sweater compared to my swatch. Great show. 🧶🇨🇦

Hi Kim, Betsy and Simone. I was at the Arne and Carlos event and had a colourful felted tweed scarf, not sure if that is the one you are referring to in the podcast. It was a Carol Sunday pattern - the Sonoma Shawl, but I made it in felted tweed because I already had about 8 colours, so just needed to buy a few more to add to it. Although working with that many colours was great, what I didn't think about is that the shawl only uses a bit of each colour, so after the shawl is done you are left with a sh*&t load of leftover felted tweed. So I made a sweater out of the rest to use it up, and I still have enough for a second sweater. I have it up on ravelry, my user name is alpaca.
@FleeceHarmonyPodcast
@FleeceHarmonyPodcast 2 ай бұрын
Hi Kathy - yours was great too! It was another one we were thinking about because she used 24 colours (as we found out last week). She had a lot of bits from a lot of Felted Tweed projects!

I used to be terrified of the math involved in designing a sweater but took a course many yrs ago with Rowan's Sharon Brant when she came to Ottawa. She broke the math into small bits...do a gauge swatch(it's a small box), draw your sweater idea and put in the basic height & width you want, then choose armholes & necklines, then figure out how many of those little square swatches fit into the picture you've drawn. The height is the rows and the width is the stitches. There of course were many more finite details but that was really the basics. Have to say that is still the ONLY math I don't mind... and fractions for baking amounts when you increase or decrease a recipe...other than those two things I still hate math...lol. Glad Betsy shared that many designers outsource grading though...that's still just waaaaay toooo much math....LOL Thanks for another woolly delicious episode.

@FleeceHarmonyPodcast

We will have to see how much yarn it takes first. We only do kits when just a small amount of a new skein needs to be used. For example, if the cowl requires 250 yards and the skeins are 200 yards. Both colours will be always available - they are not limited editions.
