Notes from the additive manufacturing neighbor: if you need to make small parts, try to use a .2mm nozzle but mainly by adjusting(increase) your minimum layer TIME either in settings or by slowing down your print speed. FDM struggles with small parts primarily from a lack of heat disapation. Stacking hot plastic makes a pile of goo, give it more time to cool down. Btw: I love seeing 3Dprinters/parts used in manufacturing of metals. Quick specialty jigs and fixtures are a huge selling point for me. Tldr: Crank your part cooling fan to 100%, slow your print speed down, smaller nozzle might help. Nusher.

From what I recall, that assembly is essentially a DC version of a rotary phase converter. Not actually impractical on the efficiency side in theory, and wrapped up in a real machine with a mass on the rotor it'll also do a very good job of smoothing out power fluctuations to boot.

I made a flat belt from duct tape but later found a nice rubber one for a tape recorder in a bag of replacement belts at the radio shack equivalent we have here. I painted mine with asphaltum which is a bit like very old school powder coat used in japanning. Its super hard super shiny and super black.

Way back in the day I used to rewind the armatures for slot car motors. It’s amazing that they were assembled just like your generator; spacer and U shaped spring clips for the magnets. Used to shim between the magnets and the motor housing for a few more rpm’s I did notice there wasn’t a step to check armature end play. Guess the kit is precision enough so not needed.

So to drive it, mount it and a steam engine on a car that can go behind the new Train engine and then put in a plumbing system that lets you tap steam off the rail engine for the generator engine. Then you have a small mobile power generator system for a work train or perhaps even powering other things.

I wonder if it would be possible to modify the Turnado tracing tool so that the movement of the tracing point was reduced by a set ratio to the cutting tool. E.g. you move the tracing tool 4cm and it translates to a 1cm movement of the cutting tool. It would be a lever arrangement of some design but what that is I don't know. It would be handy for small pieces where you could make the template larger to provide a higher resolution to trace.

The low precision method for converting from bushings to ball bearings is to put paper sheets around the rotor and then put it together with epoxy holding the ball bearing in place in the end bells. Then it's just a matter of taking it apart and taking the paper out.
