The whole point of the old style rack and pinion setup is that it's safe. If you just push it down slow enough, it's not going to generate the voltage needed to trigger the blasting cap.

I wish it had something to keep it from being always hot tho. Like something at the end to force it past so that it's normal state is open/cold. On a traditional one it's the motion down that sends a pulse. But starting down on yours unfortunately would also set it off. Not to mention also accidentally shock u if your hand got in the way. Looks like a ton of fun. Would be so much fun to set off fireworks that way

Looks great, just feel like it Linda defeats the purpose since it can go off just by moving the plunger down gently. The original mechanism was way safer since there would not be any detonation if you just pressed it down slowly..

I know I'm way behind the curve on this, but I just watched the blast shield ep and I wanted to see how the plunger worked. I'm sure you've thought of it especially after the airgun testing, but you really should have a way to turn off the power other than having the plunger retracted. A little bit of a safety issue and most of the time you only want a momentary signal anyway. The advantage with the generator is there is only power when the plunger moves.
@giraffe_hd9773
@giraffe_hd9773 3 жыл бұрын
even further behind the curve, but another possibility I was considering when he was building it would have been coiling copper wire and passing a magnet through it, it's much less complex than the generator and also avoids the issue of constant power flow. I don't see why it wouldn't work in theory, not sure how effective it would be in practicality.
@andrewlang3908
@andrewlang3908 3 жыл бұрын
@@giraffe_hd9773 very ineffective unfortunately. It wouldn't even generate enough charge to trigger an active circuit. Induction charge is great when you have an active power source but not so great at creating a charge from nothing

why would you not use a generator? by using a battery you have the extra step of needing to make sure said battery is charged before each use. and every motor is a generator in reverse, so you potentially have the ability to make one if you dont have access to a hand generator of the right voltage.

Kinda of sad you didn't use the generator that normally is attached to the bike's wheel to run the lights. Several of those in parallel should have given you the amperage needed to set of whatever primer you had. You could use the action of the plunger bar to run them all, and that would have been a much truer to history recreation of what the real plungers did.

All that work to make it look weathered but then you went and put a brand new looking leather strap on it to carry it at 7:40 though I notice you didn't have the strap on in later clips so I'm guessing you also noticed that it detracted from the old weathered feel
