HI GUYS! This video wraps up the finish shaping and detail carving on the Knights. Though this has not really been a"how to" video series, I do enjoy explaining processes as I go through them and My hope is that you find these tips and hints and bits of technique that i pass on helpful... or at least entertaining . The knight is a challenging piece, but with a bit of practice I truly believe anyone can learn to carve like this.
Once again... the tools and techniques I will be using in this video ARE NOT being used as a representation of the fastest, most efficient, or the best way to carve a chess knight...
My intention with this video is to present the task of carving a knight using simple, primitive techniques with tools that are cheap and fairly readily accessible to most of my viewers. Could you use a band saw?...of course. could you power-carve the whole thing with the dremmel or rotary tool?... absolutely. Can it be done faster and easier than I show here? YEP...... I simply want anyone watching to be able to do it with what they have on hand for super cheap.
So here is the DETAILED KNIGHT CARVING Vidoe you amazing, do it yourself loving, wood working, chess playing, KZfaq watching, hand crafting nerds have been waiting for!!! ENJOY
VIDEO DESCRIPTION
Make the pawns...check. Make the rooks...check. Make the bishops...check! Make the knights...CHECK..................
.......aaaaaand DOUBLE CHECK!...(.which everyone knows means you have to move your King :)
On a side note: Spending so much time with these chess set videos and having received so much positive feedback from you guys has made me aware of just how many awesome people love the game of chess. I have for a while now had the desire to perhaps share a little bit of what I have learned about the game of chess with you people and how chess has helped me learn to better prioritize my goals. So I think after I wrap up this series, I may do a short series on my system of chess strategy and the processes I go through to find good moves. with all the buzz that alpha zero and the deep mind group has created lately, I think the door is wide open for chess to go through a full fledged revolution and for new ways of determining relevant information and strategies to emerge. (I'm really excited about making these videos).
ps...Here is a bit of info from my last knight video that you might find interesting:
What is one of the biggest determining factors in the pricing a chess set? HOW THE KNIGHTS ARE CARVED! Carving the knights in a chess set is one of the most daunting tasks to consider when taking on the chess set project. The knight is definitely the most tricky of the minor pieces... And there are so many Knight designs to take into account... French, German, English, Dubrovnik, and the plethora of stylized luxury knights found in high end sets. The style you choose will in many ways be determined by the intended use for the chess set. do you want a chess set for the chess club? Do you need one For rough tournament play or for hustling chess in the park? If so, You probably are not going to want a pretty rough and tough set with no frills or fine details that could be easily damaged by one of those games that end with the board being turned over.
The chess set I am making here was for a New York client that wanted a custom designed heirloom quality piece as a gift to her husband... So in this video I will be starting the process of making a more stylized and refined set of knights. It is a JUMBO chess set after all, and as such it is intended to be admired as a quality piece of hand made craftsmanship. lets see if I am up to the challenge.

Beautiful craftsmanship. Almost all knights are done in two parts with the base and actual knight done separately. Kudos for doing it in 1.

Giving the horse a 'Mohawk' for the mane. You can make your own mini hole saw from a bit of brass tubing. Cut a few slits in the tubing to act as saw teeth, and sharpen with a file or stone. Cheaper than the replacement punches. I suspect that HF's complete leather punch will be cheaper than the replacement set of punches.

I’m working a difficult event with Gary Kasperov on a Ukraine fundraiser on Sunday, I tryed to see my estranged 30 YO Son Tuseday that I used to play chess with. Watching your videos had a calming efect on me and I am in awe of your skills, including video editing. I’d rather have a set like you make than an expensive sports car.

But i love to collect beautiful chess set just because i love the game it self. seeing u put a really lot of time (2 hours video, maybe more in real time) in just one knight make me respect my chess piece at home a lot more. u are really the untold hero behind the chess history. Thank you!! there are only few people in the world that can do what u have done.

Wow! incredible detailing. I can't help wondering what it would look like if you split the mane into lots of peices. @ 53.14 you began adjusting the left right balance and for a moment I could see a horse with a punk rocker hairstlye. Seriously though, I'm transfixed by watching you work. Thanks for sharing the process.

Cool to see that you're a chess player too. Question: Are you doing the black knights in a slightly different style or will they be perfect copies? Since this is a showpiece and all...
@ConradCraft
@ConradCraft 6 жыл бұрын
Sacha Albarda Thanks! You can look at the end of the video to see how I did the dark knights. I included photos of the finished group of knights at the end. The black knights are carved from African Mahogany which has a nice dark color with just a clear coat finish on it. The white and black side knights are basically Identical.

Size matters! I’m making a 2.5” square board, so the king needs to be 4.5” tall. Bigger squares, bigger pieces (and bigger price tag).

I am sure in the beginning you lost a lot of eyes to slips, chips and tears on the knight. This has to be the most complicated to make do with all the carving necessary. I can see this one piece could take several hours to carve the way you want to it. As it would be easy to get so involved with the detail that you make it hard to duplicate the same detail on the other knights. I would have to say there are no two knight exactly alike. They may come close but not like the rest of the pieces in this series of chess pieces.
@mainlymusicman
@mainlymusicman 5 жыл бұрын
have you ever seen the way the Indian guys do it? they use the dremel-like tool for the knights. they get ridiculous detail and precision. also they use a metal die cut for the other pieces. looks like it would be 10 times quicker. check it out... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ar16orVqtq6VYp8.html funny, if you look at their shop it looks like some place in the 1930's. but look at the freaking quality of their work. your knight looks pretty decent, much better than most other "North American" attempts. lol. but i imagine it took a awful long time.
