Part 1:
• Making a HUGE log spli...
With winter nearly here it’s time to do a bit more on the log splitter.
In this video I design and fabricate the head that slides up and down the log splitter.
That parts were drawn using Onshape, each part is then saved as a dxf and loaded into the Kutavar program ready to be cut out.
After the parts are cnc plasma cut out, they are cleaned up, the pin hole bored out using the boring head on the milling machine and then welded together.
Hope you enjoyed the video.
Thanks for watching.

Great video and a very well built splitter the only suggestion I would make after experience with various splitters would be to consider fitting telehandler nylon wear pad material as top and bottom parts of your sandwich for the sliding head otherwise metal to metal it’ll have a tendency to chew itself up pretty quickly and after a couple of passes any grease you put on to help gets wiped away by wood debris

might i suggest that next time you make slots for the tabs, design the slots in a dog bone style, slightly wider on the short sides and the tabs will fit in with minimal prep and as a bonus provide full weld penetration where the gaps are.

I think that your Deere is going to be revving well to pump enough oil to cycle that ram at working rate! PTO pump and tank was my answer to this problem when I built my big splitter years ago, tractor sits at low revs and ram still cycles fast. Also don't skimp on table size like I did...... HTH Looking forward to seeing next instalment. 👍

I name this log splitter 'Titanic'. God bless her all that split with her! Seriously though, that's a great project to hone your cad skills. Having extensively used a much smaller twin ram log splitter on a 6610, it's slow, and the oil gets pretty hot! I personally use a 34t Chinese built kinetic log splitter and have not found anything it wont split, even gnarly gum! 2-3 second cycle and tows behind the lawnmower. Take care. The bigger the splitter, the bigger the bang when a gnarly log eventually succumbs to such forces. Stand clear!

WWW sent me over here, so glad Wes did, awesome channel, your really over engineer your fab and that keeps everyone safe. Camarata did a short bit and the end of his video on finishing his roof. Some folks commented about how strong his welds were. To demo that, he ran a 1” bead then proceeded to lift massive ‘H’ and ‘I’ beams then picked up the front of his truck. Job done. Kindest regards from Bonnie Scotland. Joe.

We used to have a 16T vertical splitter, which we used on the back of an old Fendt Favorit 611. It could split anything provided you had the strength to lift the wood. We eventually upgraded to a Komatsu mini digger with thumb to load it... Greatly enjoying your videos, thank you.

Certainly take the skin off a rice pudding with that beast. Nice job so far. You will need wear plates. The friction on such a beam is huge in use. I have found that with my vertical post knocker repurposed from an old splitter. Just gravity drop of a concrete lump but it tended to jam on the winch up. Its all trial and error but good fun.

Blimey, you'll be splitting giant redwoods with that thing. Its starting to look really good. That new plasma table seems to be coming along well, just being able to drop dxf's into the software and then move them around must be a real boon. Same with a lot of these things now, it is the software that kills them or makes them. I'm always amazed by how much stuff there is around with rubbish software.

Good to see you getting to grips with the new plasma Olly. The first pins/bores I repaired for our tree equipment, I made the parts to size, soon learned thats not the best for buckets etc, now I always leave a bit more "wiggle" room ! I've built a couple of vertical splitters for cutting "rings" from our tree service work and I'm on with gathering parts for a big horizontal like yours now, but I'm putting the wedge on the ram and a couple of "wings" either side to catch the splits. I think this is the better way for a big splitter as there's less walking and handling, unless you're going to fit something like a box wedge on the end ?

That suicidal fly thing is freaky, I remember one time coming into fall at my old metal clad shop I bumped the corner and noticed a cpl flys fall out from behind the cladding at the ground and thought it was strange so I hit the siding again w my hand several more fell out, that got me wondering, long story short after many smacks with various smackers ended up with several thousand half awake (hibernating?) flys in pile, and now every year do a “fly check” of all my structures with cladding but have yet to find another flymagetton although did come across a lady bug Colony but not in the same magnitude and did my best to leave undisturbed once found. Any way love the channel and nice to see someone showing real fabrication challenges and solutions over the highly edited and “perfectly executed” projects on other channels. As you know not every customer can afford or wants the by the book repair. Keep the content flowing and I’ll keep 👍 and subscribing

Give the pin a good grease fitting. If something bends then u can still get it out easily if it's gets some grease every now and then. I know from experience working on loading ramps that sit outside. When u have to get those out and they didn't see some grease every now and then you'll be cutting pins and/or even bushings becausr moisture got in there. Even if it's a BIG IF better safe then sorry
