I had a blast turning this demo blade into a heirloom quality gift! The beauty of the oak really surprised me, and I'm happy to have some more of this material to use on future projects. Let me know what yall think!

Good stuff. I use rural old growth hardwoods from my property for anything domestic (sawmill 5 miles from my house, run by family friends for generations)... but I can't resist exotic hardwoods when I want to make a flashy handle.

Beautiful! I just made my first knife from leaf spring steel. Since I intend to keep it, the flaws will be mine to learn from. For scales, I figured something from my property would be appropriate, so I made them from my mesquite firewood. Here in Abilene, TX, there are two kinds of trees…cedar and mesquite. 🇨🇱

I like everything about it, including the “not best practices” parts. It’s pretty enough to sit on display but I’d also not be afraid to use it and super proud to carry it. Where do you get those push sticks? You’ve really gotten good at using them, I’m sure there’s a learning curve.

Thanks Richard! I could have taken it to my disc grinder after hand sanding and before stone washing and probably have solved the issue... but just was in a rush I guess. To your point epoxy would have fixed it.

a really nice knife and especially the wooden handle pieces show a very nice surface. did you use some sort of oil on it? i have here some pieces of old oak wood (aprox. 370....380 years). i try to use it for some handle but it never comes out with such a fine surface. i use different sorts of sandpaper from coarse to fine 1000 all by hand
@RedBeardOps
@RedBeardOps 2 ай бұрын
I worked it up to around a 1000 grit finish and then buffed. If that's not a good look for your oak you could continue up to 2500 grit then buff and see how it looks.

Great Blade and Vid as always :) I like the colour contrast with the blade and handle material. I was wondering about the gapping you mentioned considering the flatness of the scales, knife surface must be it, this is something I need to work on. The sanding marks kinda work in with the stone wash IMO, I like the look but yea perhaps a clean looking stonewash would be better, hard to be sure. I like the overall looks, makes me want to pick it up and use it.
@RedBeardOps
@RedBeardOps 3 ай бұрын
Thank you greatly sir for the thoughts. I think during my hand sanding I removed a little much at the ricasso... I should have true-ed up the flat-ness on the disc grinder afterwards before stone washing... Probably never would have noticed on a knife with epoxy.

Man that's a good question that I don't know the exact answer to. I bet it matters on the climate you live.... A good rule of thumb is probably wiping it down with some Bick 5 once a year or so.

Awesome job as always. What are you currently using for lung protection? I remember a video a while ago where you had a snorkel type respirator. Do you recommend any type of nose filters? Obviously being shaved and wearing a mask would be the best bet but I’m looking for options. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just so I'm understanding, if your stitch line is 10 inches, you need 100 inches of thread and that should cover most material thickness? Sorry, I'm a little slow. Beautiful knife. The blue liners compliment the color of the oak. 👍🍻
