Lots of great tips sprinkled throughout this episode! We will finish the blade and guard to the final finish and install the guard. Then we will select and prepare the handle material and the handle pin. Finally we will mix our epoxy and glue it all together! Making a knife from ground zero - part 5 - Handle material really sets the whole project in motion towards completion. After this we will grind and shape the guard and handle at the same time!

Man, these videos are incredible. I like the real world bits where mistakes are made but rather than getting completely bummed and walking away from the project, you make the best out of it. Great lesson in how to approach this craft, kind of like grinding; it’s a process of constantly fixing mistakes as you go. Well done sir!

Nice video, Airin. This one is kinda long though. On pinning the handle, I kind of prefer waiting to drill the hole in the tang. I usually seat the tang and drill into wood and just touch the tang so I know where it should be centered then pull the handle off and drill the hole. I've tried the way you showed with the larger hole and it never seems to work out as well. Could be just me of course! Also, have q-tips ready for the cleanup of the squeeze-out epoxy. I'm always running through the house looking for q-tips at that moment... LOL.

Quick note, The video is long for you, but you already know how to make knives. I am trying to cater the videos at first time makers that really want to see the nitty gritty. I remembered back when I started all we had was a couple quick build videos that I would watch 10 times trying to gleam insight but they never really explained anything! I am thrilled with all the positive feedback on the build series videos! I liked your new videos with you in front of the camera! It brings in a whole new layer to the experience! Great work man. That feather pattern is Sick!

Unfortunately the hamon didn't pop like I had wished on this one. This is the one problem with releasing a series as you film it, however, you guys get to witness firsthand what real life knife making can be like. You have to learn how to roll with the punches. This will still be an amazing knife in the end of the series! Thanks for following along with the series!

@@Aleeknives since i dont have a drill press do you think i should use my drill to bore out the handle for the tang? or should i glue 2 pieces of wood together that i have routered and chiseled out for the tang? The second kindof feels like cheating to me but i dont know what "knife people" think lol.
@Aleeknives
@Aleeknives 4 жыл бұрын
I've done both methods! I prefer drilling it out though. I think the joint in the material could be a weak spot depending on what you used to glue together. You could easily put your drill in a vise and hold your material in your hand to hollow it out.

Hey so if you do a very fine coating of satanite suspended in water to where it is very thin and watery on your blade before doing your hamon clay, you'll make it to where the oil won't get underneath your hamon clay and you'll get more figure

Have you tried this? That is interesting. So paint on a thin coat and let it dry. Then apply the thicker coat over the top?

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. Terrific work. Quick question. You said that whitetail deer horn is not good for handle material. I have made two knives using them. I see J B weld has a stabilizing liquid. Also who made your touch mark? Thanks again.
@Aleeknives
@Aleeknives 4 жыл бұрын
I use cactus juice brand stabilizing resin. I don't have experience with the jb weld product. I will make a video on making the touch mark stamp! But basically you widle a design into tool steel and then harden it.

Try mixing cao wool with your clay. It will allow you to put the clay thicker on the spine. Caution with the wool of coarse

@@Aleeknives great video, by the way. You answered one of my questions. About protecting the blades from rust. When I wet form the leather around the knife . I have a hell of a time with the rust. Leather seems to made to corrode metal. And once that Iron oxide gets into the leather, it's there forever. Wondering if you have a cure for this?
@Aleeknives
@Aleeknives 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't had that happen yet! If the knife is going to be in the sheath wet for any length of time I will wrap it in plastic wrap first.

I took a old Barnett Black Diamond file,normalized,shaped, hardened but was not completely easy to work. I took it down to diff tapered sizes around 1\4 thick.. Hardened it today and stuck it in toaster oven for an hour.. It looks perfect bronze shade....Do I need to temper it the second cycle if i is perfect tone tempered after 1??? Darn..Do not know what to do,is cooling to room temp now after 1 cycle at 420...It looks perfect...Is it possible it only needed the one cycle?
@Aleeknives
@Aleeknives 2 жыл бұрын
You can not over temper a knife. You could leave it at 400 degrees for a week and it would still o ly ne tempered to 400 degrees. The second cycle of cooling down and heating it again only refines the grains slightly more than the first cycle. It is done more for good measure than anything. I have skipped the second temper on builds but those tend to be a little more brittle
@aldenunion
@aldenunion 2 жыл бұрын
@@Aleeknives Being is thick ,I went and did the second..Then I was reading some do 3,but glad probably good. Right at front filed bolster,hint of blue telling me it softened a bit in perfect spot. It turned out amazing tones,so nice that considering leaving it.lol Thank you,was wondering even on a third but I want edge retention..I heated a gallon of jet skii 2 cycle oil that a neighbor tossed unopened thinking it was old.It is more low viscosity than regular oil.If this performs well I may keep using it. Do you use Parks50?.Thanks for the tip,was worried.I heard some say no matter what they did,file stayed brittle when so thick.When I see blue in spot that takes pressure,I think of an axe head (45-55 Hrc) but blade is dark bronze..I never did one this thick,worried but I had her even toned.I tapered forward from filed bolster to tip,then backward from filed bolster to tan/Butt... So nice..Everyone that seen it,drooled..lol...Salute..
