I have made a few of these myself. I used to drill the holes and this way took ages. The punch was much faster so I agree with that. I make holes in the patten and mark them out first. Sometimes using the sand is very hard to remove all the sand . Nothing worse then having sand in a bottle of mead which gets in your mouth.I'll try pop corn in future.

I'm considering attempting this but rather than coating the inside with beeswax, I might try using epoxy instead. I think this way, it would never need to be rewaxed, or at least so long as someone didn't sit on the thing once it was finished.

I make some products with horn, and one client of mine asked me to make a horn cantil, and i want to seal the interior of that with beeswax. I have some experience with beeswax on the drinking horns that i make, but somewhen youll have to replace the beeswax on the drinking horn, but in the cantil, the client will have to make this by his own? I mean, with distilled drinks like whiskey or vodka, beeswax will have a useful life shortened?
@Hobbitbuilds

Once the wax is embedded in the leather it shouldn't come out unless its heated and drips out.

@@Hobbitbuilds , is there a way to make the seals heat tolerant? Perhaps an alternative to beeswax? Just inquiring to see if there is any way to make a leather canteen insulated (might even be a separate inlay).

Why not soak the entire piece in beeswax? Would give a more consistent coating of wax and would also apply a wax finish to the outside, wouldn't it?
@Hobbitbuilds
@Hobbitbuilds 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you could do that. I do actually cost the whole thing. First the inside, then I cost the outside. For me, by starting with the inside first, I can be confident that the inside is saturated when I see it come through to the outside.

I was looking into making these as well as horns and had seen beeswax specifically listed as one of the liners other people in the states are using to sell them, so I was hoping to read up on the law itself, see if beeswax is legal, or if a food grade epoxy is necessary.
