These are the steps that I use to make my leather costrels, also known as leather water bottles or leather canteens. Part 1: This video deals with cutting out the pattern and assembling those sides to prepare for stitching and shaping.

Yes it can be tricky to find the process. There are a few variations on this, but I haven't explored them in detail just yet.

A good way to line it up without worrying, is to simply place wax paper in between and start from the top or bottom and slowly inch the wax paper down. This allows you to make tiny corrections at the edges without the impossible task of pulling the whole project apart. Not sure If I explained that correctly.

You can get a leather thickness gauge from weaver leather

Great video! How is the taste of water when you drink from it? I think I'll try to make one!

Everything taste fine. Though I would imagine if it gets too warm, you might get some taste, though nothing major. I usually carry mine with mead and pour out into a mug and I get no taste. Drinking straight from costrel, you may get some of the smell with your taste.

@@dwaynecurtis8499 really I just looked at the size I wanted and drew a shape I liked, then folded it in half and trimmed it so that it was symmetrical

Can you use faux leather? I'm like on the vegetarian/vegan plant-based spectrum and I'm not sure how I'd feel using an animal's hide.

I haven't had any experience with faux leather, so I wouldn't be able to give you any advice on that. Off the top of my head I would say you could take a water container, like glass, and wrap with faux leather to get the look.

@03:41 What oddball unit of measurement is that? Why are you not using ounces?! Ounces of what; I don't know, but ounces is the ONLY appropriate way to measure leather thickness.
