To craft the mask for the Zoidberg Project, effects artist Frank Ippolito has to first make a realistic duplicate of a head to sculpt on. This is done through a process called lifecasting, in which Frank covers Norm's head with silicone to make a perfect mold. That mold is then filled with plaster to create Norm's creepy double.

He mentioned washing a car from the top down. I used to work a place detailing cars all by myself. It seems counter intuitive but I learned if you're gonna wash the whole thing in one sitting. That if you go from the bottom up, your soap won't bleed down and cover up spots you've not cleaned yet. So, you can get everywhere in one go. Not having to rely on drying or a second pass to get it completely clean. This wasn't always useful and sometimes the car would be so small that it wouldn't matter, etc. If you're washing a large SUV that's pretty dirty try it. You have to rinse it in the same way you wash it so the water isn't covering up your progress, I know people will say, "You're letting dirty water from the top run down the side over the parts you just cleaned!" Once the dirt particulate is loose then it doesn't adhere to the car again. Especially if you're continually rinsing it. Just a bit of experience that might help someone.

Love this video for two reasons, Number 1 it is really descriptive and helps me when I'll hopefully be able to life cast properly in my sfx career, and Number 2 this is the only video where Norm has stayed quiet and it makes me happy, he's so bloody annoying when he comments on things that Frank is already doing

So I know that the alginate casts do not last very long before having to cast in plaster or resin or whatever before they deteriorate...how long do the silicone molds last? I'm guessing they have a longer lifespan. Or is it more of a limit of how many new casts can be pulled from the silicone mold before deterioration from the recasting?

Funny about the sticking you hand in plaster story. A guy in my Makeup class at the Art Institute did that . He filled a 2 Liter soda bottle with Ultracal 30 and put his fist down into it. Needless to say, for anyone who has worked with Ultracal, it started to burn his hand and arm. We got chisels and mallets and did an emergency rescue ha ha. Not sure how he thought he was going to get his hand out anyway once it cured.

I find it a little annoying how no one is able to specify an approxiate number of plaster rolls needed for the average head. There must be some kind of standard. Like "it usually takes 7 rolls". I've seen people say that 2 doses of the Smooth-On stuff is usually enough, but they never seem to talk about the plaster.

Seriously, TESTED, Frank needs his own videos. This is infinitely more interesting than anything I've seen on FACE/OFF. And unlike that show, I actually LEARNED how to do what I watched. Face/off is like a lame cooking contest show, where you think you picked up techniques and ideas, but really learned nothing. We need more videos like this.
