Making a Live Edge Floating Shelf with Hand Cut Bow Tie Inlays

For this project, I take a walnut slab that has a rotten end, an ugly squared-off chainsaw cut, and a few large cracks, sculpt it with some power carving, and cut some bow tie inlays to turn it into a live edge floating shelf. I think it is some of the cooler woodworking art I have done in a while.
I also show how I hung the shelf on the wall.

I always drill down to just shy of the depth of the butterfly key so I can ensure I’m not going too deep and also take away most of the waste wood, saves the elbow grease. Good work, great video

Great tips again Brian, I love the story stick trick. Also those bow tie lessons are just what I am looking for. I've managed to get my hands on 7 curved slabs of live edge oak about 6ft long 2' thick. They kind of curve through 90 degrees, so I am planning on making a small staircase in the corner of our kitchen. I want to incorporate these details into the project. Thanks for the vid.

You made a technical video, but what it reveals is that you are also a true creative artist, thinking about what would be right in showing off this piece of wood and justifying it's being there the way it is. That's rare! I hope to see many more videos not just focused on technique (i love that, so keep it up), but also with some insight into your thought process, what it is that makes this piece of wood or this particular function interesting, and why you design it in this specific way.

Great build, but instead of using that compass. Put the board against the wall, and run the pencil along the wall, it will put a mark on the board as the pencil follows the wall. A carpenter’s flat pencil would even be better.

My cat would go bonkers trying to get over to that shelf to play. I found him hanging from a fan one time totally freaked me out. Wonderful use of a neat old piece of wood.

Brian, that turned out great! I did a floating shelf on my channel recently and I see we both had similar ideas but different paths were taken. Wish I had the hardware you used, had to make my own out of lag bolts. If you get a chance check it out, it’s called “floating mirror shelf”. Awesome job brother!!!

The basic premise is that the crack has to pull against the shape and long grain of the bow tie. So really any shape that recreates those conditions should, in theory, work.
