This was a bit of a trial project. I have never done a knife holder. Pouring epoxy and planing some planks was an easy stuff. But figuring out what magnets to choose and how deep imbed them into wood. That was the most interesting part. It turned out fantastic. Looks super vibrant and works just great.
Best wishes to @simon.bites

Amazing video. Questions: what type of oil did you use at the end? did you sprayed water before sanding? and did you use the finest sandpapers? also, what did you use in the small holes before sanding, is it more epoxy or glue? thanks for a great video

Thanks! I've used a row of 10 (50mmx10mmx5mm N52) neodymium magnets 3-5mm below the surface. It was an overkill, you could stick an axe on it (small one :D). Anyhow, I could have use a bit smaller magnets.

That looks awesome! What type of finish did u use? I’m also making something similar and trying to decide what to use. I was thinking mineral oil/beeswax since it will be in contact with knives which will cut food.
@Chiselsplay
@Chiselsplay 3 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure I used rubio Monocoat on this one. My thought behind it was that it’s not a cutting board and food won’t have direct contact with it. It’s like tabletop. You put your tools on it, but you don’t eat straight from it (at least not too often:DD). Though foodsafe finish is also a good choice, but some refreshment might be needed from time to time.

what kind of tapes are you using between 1:21 - 1:35? Making a knife holder of my own :)
@Chiselsplay
@Chiselsplay 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve used simple masking tape on the bottom of those planks just to prevent silicone from seeping into the wood grain. And I’ve used simple packing tape (make sure it’s made out of polyethylene) so epoxy wouldn’t stick to it. Any tape made out of PET(E) will work, packing tape seems to be the cheapest. Good luck with your build!!

i noticed you disconnected your vacuum hose when planing. Any reason you do that? lol i ask but i think i know because i didnt and i just found out what epoxy can do to your dust collection system ... the pvc pipes, the motor and pretty much every part of my system.
@Chiselsplay
@Chiselsplay 2 ай бұрын
The reason was a bit different. We used to giveaway our wood dust and chips to be used as bedding for horses. Epoxy was not on the wish list for these gorgeous animals 😂

@@Chiselsplay haha i never knew that they use the wood chips for horse bedding. my niece rides every week. ill have to see if i can do the same. They really are majestic beautiful animals. ut i still stand by epoxy going thru the dust collection is like a cancer.

Hi, sorry if this is a stupid question, but let me ask... is the magnet within the grey resin or are they magnets which you wedged into that slot you cut into the wood with that Festool machine?

I have placed the magnets in the slot. Epoxy is just for looks;))

Great video? What is the thickness of the wood between the magnets and the knives?
@Chiselsplay
@Chiselsplay 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Its about 3mm. But it all depends on the magnet size and strength. I did a test with the magnets I got and 3mm seemed to be the sweet spot

@@Chiselsplay very nice piece of work. I have a question about the chosen magnets. Do you think stronger/or less strong would be better? Will you take another magnets if you would do the same thing again? Also, would you recommend to install the magnets closer to the front face? For example 2mm. I am asking because I'm also planning to do smth similar :)

I have tools and knives. I have only the fridge to use what suggestions you have for a proper build? 2 cleavers, 2 chef's, 4 petit chefs, 4 santokus, 1boner, 1 carver, 1 bread, 4 filet, 1 deli, 2 can openers, 1 sharpener, and 2 shears? I assume a few magnetic strips i have black stainless fridge and want complementary holders. Contact me if you would want the task of the build epoxy of course.
