Is there any chance we could have a bonus video with you going back to loads of your projects to see if you still use them and how they have held up. For instance the wave table, your bedside table, the log bench, your king size bed? Just a thought might be nice to see all the things you have made again

What a beautiful setting for a tree platform! I remember our zip line from my childhood. So much fun! Wish we would've had a break... Awesome build btw and if people end up injured from this video, I really think they shouldn't have built anything in the first place. You always have this thoughtful touch making people confident in doing their own stuff. I've learned a lot over the years from watching your vids. Thanks Bob & co!

Trees are very strong, we've been building houses out of trees for a very long time. There seems to be a disconeect people have with 'trees at the park' and 'trees at lowes'. I don't really get why people freak out over trees so much. Using one tree for a treehouse is not the same as clearing 100 acres of deforestation lol. If anything he's gonna take better care of that tree to make sure it dosen't fall over!

I think the issue is actually more practical than that. Felling trees on your property can be expensive, especially when it's near a building. If you damage a tree enough that it becomes ill or dies, you have to deal with the fallout from taking the tree (and the treehouse) down.

Hi Bob! Thanks for another great video! Just a small comment about stiffening the platform against twisting. If got it right, you suggested to stiffen the platform itself (by adding brackets or the decking boards) to prevent the twisting. However, I afraid that this will not do the trick since you are stiffening the wrong plane. The right way to stiffen the platform against twisting is by adding stiffness out of the platform's plane. A possible way to so is to add diagonal braces between the vertical diagonals holding the corners of the platform. Other option would be to add small diagonal braces between the vertical diagonals and the platform. Otherwise, interesting and fun video and a great built. Enjoy the zip!

That looks like a white oak and if so it will get a lot wider and either split your platform or get restricted by it and die. Idk if there is a floating way of attaching it to account for that, or maybe you wont need it for long enough to matter, but that is something worth considering.

I agree. I’ve seen some tree house builds where they put a spacer of some kind between the ledger and the tree to allow for growth. I think a cheap and easy thing he could have done is use a stack of washers or section of pipe to separate the ledger from the tree. You would need to increase the diameter of your screws because now they are acting as cantilevers.
@famousamoso7
@famousamoso7 2 жыл бұрын
How do you account for the diameter of the tree growing over the years and affecting the knee braces? Is the growth minimal in the overall scheme?

I always use structural screws with the structural ties now, even though they are way more expensive than the nails. 1) Its way way way faster, 2) way less impact damage on your arms and fingers, and 3) There is always, always a few hard to reach angles and such, and its way easier with the screws. So much worth the extra expense.

I was wondering as the tree grows, will the platform move up and as the trunk dia grows how would that affect the platform? Cool project!

Trees don’t grow from the ground up but from the top. Names carved in a tree will stay at the same height, they just expand a bit.
@drhender6943
@drhender6943 2 жыл бұрын
Although the platform will not rise, the girth (ie, diameter) of the tree will increase over time. That will change the angle of the knee braces, making them steeper and steeper. (That's not a bad thing.) With any tree structure, you should do a yearly inspection to see if there is maintenance that needs to be done, such as addressing loose bolt and checking to see if decking rubbing on the trunk. As the tree gets bigger in diameter, the gap between deck boards and trunk will shrink. Eventually, they will need to be recut to allow for space.
