I like the format of how you do your videos. Instead of putting yourself in the video explaining things that you're doing, you film the entire process and then narrate it. This makes for a much more enjoyable video and makes it easier to understand as you do a very good job of explaining to the viewer what is being seen in the video. You've earned another sub.

4:42 -- when you're using layout dye you can use a very light stroke with the scribe, all it has to do is go through the dye. You're putting a lot of muscle into it and getting imprecise results from lack of control. Even when you're not using dye, you're pressing much harder than necessary. Sharp tip and light touch does it.

Great video for an essential addition to the mini lathe. One thing I noticed at around 5:30 is that you were experiencing drill bit grabbing whilst drilling the brass. This is scary, but you can modify your drill bits to stop this. You just need to take a diamond hone and zero the rake of the drill bit. It then won't grab and will cut away in chips instead. Much safer when cutting brass!

Like your projects. may I make a few suggestions? The metal the parts of your lathe is made from is Cast or Ductile iron; Keep it away from the ways on your lathe. It WILL damage them. After any machining of this material, a complete clean of the machine is necessary. Look for or make a travelling steady. this will enable you to machine long thin stock accurately.

6:29 that insert has a chip breaker, but it's probably designed to work at much higher speeds. A big difficulty with using carbide on small light machines is being able to run it fast enough to get the amazing finishes it can produce in its proper speed range.

It's 3 years later and they're actually fitting carriage locks at the factory. They're not very good and twist when moving the carriage back. I've been considering making something along these lines to make it move more smoothly. However I also have a problem with the cross slide. It cants over on the gib side under heavy load (for the size/quality of the lathe) and I'm seriously considering adding a cross slide lock as well.

5:50 you'll have a lot better luck tapping straight holes if you start using some mechanical means to keep the tap lined up perpendicular as you begin the thread. Same for a die, the lathe offers various ways of keeping the die lined up as it starts.

One guy did lots of work on it and he shows how to take of alot of steel in one pass I didnt believe this lathe can take so much. I have a CJ18 from Amadeal lathe but its basically same.. Havent done much to my lathe. Too busy or tired after work. Maybe in the spring

why not just lock the half nut into the cross feed without it running. serious question I do this with my c3 and it works. is this a bad thing to do.
@thereve
@thereve 4 жыл бұрын
Not a bad thing to do and is much better than nothing, but you still have a tiny bit of slop in there. That, and I find it very difficult to get the gear lever into the position where the screw stops turning. I haven't made a lock yet for mine but I think I will copy this design. There are better ones but most of them seem to require milling, which I cannot do.

Very cool. But how limited is movement of the cross now? (does it hit those grub srcrews?) I already have a screw on my lathe, but its recessed hex screw - i have to use allen key, but was already thinking about making a handle..
@TimNummy
@TimNummy 7 жыл бұрын
Hey! I thought I would have to replace the grub screws with set screws (and I probably will at some point) so the heads don't interfere but to my surprise it hasn't kept me from doing anything yet either from hitting the screws on the cross slide or the handle hitting the bottom of the compound slide. Thanks for watching!

5:30 the drill is grabbing because the rake angle of the cutting lips is wrong for brass. It will snatch as you see, and in a deep hole it will wander. To convert a drill to use on brass, gently stone the leading edge of the cutting lips with a stone held parallel to the axis of the drill, so that you get a tiny flat on the cutting edge. That reduces the rake angle to zero and it will work sweetly in brass. Be very careful not to round the outer corner of the lip, that will lead to disaster.

When you say't - had to turn down so the compound slide go over? It looks to me at cross slide tightening screw gonna crash first before compound slide gonna get to the nut
@TimNummy
@TimNummy 7 жыл бұрын
You're correct when the compound slide is at 0* but if it is rotated for taper cuts, it would have hit the cap - this way I can have it locked for taper cuts as well. I was thinking that I'd need to replace the tightening cap screws with set screws (and I probably will anyway) but the range of motion is likely good enough for most situations I've run into so far.

Late here but i dont understand why a carriage lock is needed. I get why but leaving the lead screw in neutral and just engaging the lead screw on the carriage works pretty well for a lock. Atleast in my experience it does.

about your thread size - okay - BUT a finer thread will give you more clamping force (ALWAYS) for less force applied.

2:16 you're working way too far from the chuck for an unsupported piece. You either need to use the tailstock center or a "fixed steady rest". And you need to get your tailstock centered up to match the spindle, of course, before you can do precision work. You can do that by making a test bar eight or ten inches long out of one inch stock and roughing the diameter down somewhat except for an inch or so band near each end that you will take light cuts on as you turn it between centers, and then check the resulting diameters. If they match you're doing something right. Little Machine Shop has plans for a doohickey you can stick on the tailstock to make the actual adjustment easier than it apparently is on that lathe (my Atlas has a big setscrew on each side, tighten one and loosen the other to move it sideways) While I'm thinking about it, if you put a spring between the tailstock and the clamp underneath, it will slide freely with much less movement of the clamping nut than otherwise.

@@TimNummy To state what should be well known, if your keeping the lathe properly lubricated there should be enough spare oil around that nothing should ever start to rust. It took me a very long time at this hobby before I finally learned enough to start thinking logically. For a decorative object the exact material it's made from has little meaning. For anything mechanical that's designed to perform a given task then material choices become ultra important. From a mechanical engineering perspective those material choices will all have a range of + or - natural characteristics verses the exact requirements needed for the part to function as well as possible. And all mechanical design is a series of compromises since there's no such thing as a perfect material that's been invented yet. Brass is used in some assembly's as a bearing material for rotating shafts since it has a low coefficient of friction. And it's that low coefficient of friction for brass that makes it one of the poorer choices of material for locking a lathe carriage down to the ways. Yes it will work if your handle is tightened to create enough friction to resist the carriage being moved by the cutting forces when making facing cuts. It's also not very strong, rigid or durable when compared to even mild steel. And a high degree of rigidity is exactly what that part needs. I can guarantee that brass plate is slightly bending as you tighten that locking handle. Once that happens your further reducing your locking force or friction since that plate is then only gripping on the outside edges of the lathes bottom way surfaces. So as that plate bends your further reducing it's surface contact area which drastically lowers the frictional resistance your needing. In a nut shell properly designing and then machining your own parts is a bit more complex than the average person with a home shop thinks. And choosing the best material by doing some basic research into it's physical characteristics against what the part is required to do isn't really optional. When I started at this the internet wasn't even invented yet, any information I needed I had to find and then buy specific books about whatever I wanted to know. Today it's dead easy to find more free online engineering & material data than you'll ever need.

What a horrible tool this is. If you pay just 300$ more, you'll get a nice, German engineered Proxxon lathe. Don't get me wrong, 300$ is a lot of money, but you are already making an investment of over 500$.. Tell me if I'm the one who's stupid. (PS. I totally get the point of trying to make a good, usable tool out of this crappy lathe. I'm talking more to the people who think about buying a cheap Chinese lathe.)
@TimNummy
@TimNummy 6 жыл бұрын
Not at all! Probably would have done the same had I known - but it looks a little more pricey than even $800 and for me, not having ever used a lathe before, would have had a hard time making such a big investment. But now I've learned so much that I'm almost anxious to be able to have the space to get something bigger and much better built. So in that sense, I got my money's worth on the education from this lathe. Thanks for watching!
