Making a mooring anchor out of an old tire

KZfaq has been a great reference for me on past projects so I am adding this one in hopes of helping you. Before sinking the anchor (in about 10 ft of water (fresh water) I added stainless steel chain and links (links with the little screw as shown in video), so I could adjust the length when attaching the buoy.
I measured the water depth and added about a foot when ordering chain. Remember you can combine smaller lengths of chain by using those little shackles.
I then bought a nice "Dock Mate" buoy from Overton's (the one that has the protected shackle so it has no chance of hitting your boat when tied up.

I would keep a close eye on my boat with this mooring buoy. Concrete only weighs a bit more than water; about 87 lbs. per cubic foot for concrete vs about 63 for fresh water, if my memory serves me. You are in danger of your boat drifting away with the buoy in any good wind. Just something to think about.

Hmm, very good to keep the actual engineering in mind! (I just went off past experience) I do think concrete ends up to be heavier than that though....at about 150 lbs per cubic ft. I would be interested in having an actual engineer check this out. I'm sure type of water, depth, weight of boat, force of pull, etc... will all factor in.

You are right. Sorry I had my numbers mixed up. The 87 lbs (actually about 83 lbs) is the actual weigh you have after you subtract the weight of the water (67) from the weight of the concrete (150). Glad you set it straight. I'll stop posting late at night without thinking things through. @@ubman13

Concrete weighs about 2.4 times as much as water for a given volume, making it a pretty good anchor.

What size and weight of boat do you have on this mooring

I have a 17' runabout, weighing about 2,000 lbs, but this anchor has only been used for short periods of time, mostly during the day and in fair weather. Its also in a freshwater lake, so no tide and rare occurrence of high winds/waves.

@@ubman13 thanks for the reply! I have a 30 sailboat weighs 10,000lbs I'm thinking about doing 8 5 gallon buckets of concrete? I'm in a fresh water lake as well
