It’s time to make a new lawn with grass seed in the UK. In this video we’re doing a lot of tree root removal, full re-grade of ground levels and making a brand new lawn from scratch. Can it be done for under £25??
Products I’m using (or similar - affiliate links, see below for more info):
Pre-seed fertiliser: amzn.to/3bn643T
Grass seed: amzn.to/3xVi989
Tiller: amzn.to/3yjCzJk (not quite the same as ours, but similar - bit more powerful I think!)

I thought it was Michael Jackson doing the moon dance when you were treading in that topsoil Andy. As always such a wonderfully instructive and intelligent vignette. We did pretty much the same as you in our small lawn last year, after we’d received a quote for £1,500 from a landscaper to “send some lads over to dig it up, but with no guarantee the seed will take” - saved ourselves almost £1,500 and have a nice lawn

@@GosforthHandyman Andy, you and Mrs Mac are champions! An inspiration. Fantastic attitude, very likable and talented too! The wooden batons look to be a great method of levelling. but how does the grass grow over the wood? Why isn't there a horizontal bare patch a couple of cm wide over the wooden baton? Thank you 👍

Top tip: tape a couple of boards to your boots to walk in the seed to soil. You'll be able to do that in a few minutes instead of using only the size of your feet.

Instead of paying someone to remove stumps - get my sons in - they love destroying things. Took a week to remove 2 huge sycamore stumps left over. Lawn looks great and I loved the Irish jig flattening it by you and Mrs Mac. I'll be getting mine done in a couple of weeks - youngest is a landscape gardener, so it'll be a good job to stick in his portfolio seeing the mess he has to deal with. Just waiting for the scaffolding bits to go.

Several years ago, I took down a 100+ year old Douglas fir that was in my yard (it was diseased & dying and I didn’t want it falling on my house or someone else’s). The tree guys did a great job grinding down the stump. When I put in new grass the next year, I dug down over 2feet removing wood chips from the stump. But even tho I removed so much of the wood chips, the grass in that area has struggled to stay alive. I’ve since learned that leaving wood chips in the ground changes the Ph levels such that the grass either doesn’t grow or is very patchy.

What a wonderful lawn! The years of satisfaction you'll get from a good quality, level lawn make the effort spent now seem minimal despite the backache at the time. I'm glad I'm not the only one whose garden fork lost a battle with a root. 🙂

Really recommend the Roughneck micro pickaxe. They are very cheap but so useful in the garden. It would have been ideal for this root job. Buy one and you will use it all the time. Also a 5ft/60 inch 14llb chisel/point digging bar are an essential tool in the garden etc. They chop through roots like you had for fun but come in handy again for so much, be it digging out stuff in the garden or shifting things thanks to the leverage. Again one of those why didn't I get this years ago tools.

I have never seen anyone level their lawn as precisely as you did! That extra work will pay off in the future as you will always have proper drainage away from the house. You might get a soil test kit and check the ph of the bald spots. I agree about the plastic grass! It looks fake when it's new, it doesn't feel right if you lie down on it, and like almost everything plastic it doesn't age well.

When I last planted a garden in clay soil. I hit each clod with the side of the spading fork while it was relatively fresh. And the clods just crumble. Doesn't work when they are soaking wet or sunbaked into "bricks" by the Texas sun. Leaving them over the winter also works. The freeze thaw cycle usually brakes them up if you do that.

Nice one, I think you hit the nail on the head earlier in the cons when you mentioned the lack of instant gratification (when comparing turf to seed) - people just want results now, and that's why the artificial companies win out. People need to develop patience and put the effort in rather than quick fix bodgery. Well, that is my opinion anyhow :)
