Awesome! The perfect way to finish my weekend. I know it was a lot of effort but the gate looks the business and the viewing window for the mechanism is a clever solution. Once you put the steering wheel on you’ll be sat there playing with it and the shifter like a very happy six year old in his dad’s car. Congratulations to you both!

i've seen some beautiful things in my life but this is probably THE most beautiful thing's i've seen, there's just one thing i personally think is missing that being a piece of stainless steel that has been laser etched for all your gears and pressed into a dome shape that is then flush mounted to the top of the knob.

Another bit of awesome- even if the YTY gallery (include me!) proposed not hiding the handmade, bespoke shifter ; at minimum wage it took way to long and it was an absolute pleasure watching you both working to bring it to a conclusion. And the gate looks like it was made by some old world craftsman in coveralls, with a grease rag hanging from his pocket! To bigger budgets and more awesome! Saw the Seven Spot piece- it was nice exposure and nice to see others "in the trade" see the work you are doing accepted.

The cables are finely adjustable and the gate it's self takes the brutality out of shifts so it puts the minimum amount of stress on the cables

Interesting. With any project at this level, a lot of people get disheartened about half way through. After getting an endless string of endorphin rushes from completing what they see as huge milestones (milestones like getting all the chassis tubes welded together in a vaguely car shaped single unit, getting that to the point of being a rolling chassis, fitting the engine, and the first start/moving it under it's own power) people find they don't get that same kind of rush while working on the never ending list of fiddly finishing touches. The multiple days of filling and sanding it takes to make door/bonnet/boot gaps look 100% perfect doesn't give anywhere near the same kick as the relatively quick job of initially hanging all the body panels, so these sorts of job often get done to a much lower level of quality. You'd often notice this drop in the builders enthusiasm when looking at the fit and finish on kit cars. You'd see that under the bonnet, all the alloy engine parts had been polished, and everything else was perfectly painted, but then you'd notice things like the door handles that didn't even look like they'd been cleaned since they got removed from a car in a scrap yard, let alone polished. Now, I'm pretty sure that fabricating this spacer block and shift gate (Which look stunning BTW) falls firmly in the realms of "Fiddly finishing touches", but it's been done while a significant number of the endorphin producing milestones haven't been tackled yet. So I'm now pondering if this was a task where they had all the materials on hand, so they just did it now, or if there's some much deeper "Motivation management strategy" going on here to get some of the fiddly, time consuming, motivation sapping, finishing touches done amongst some of the enthusiasm aiding milestones?

something you might want to think about trying is a wood router. They work just fine on alloy if you need to remove a large amount of material before moving onto the hand file. they do like to be lubricated with wax and will cut better in one direction more than the other (it will make sense if you try it)

Wood shift knob for the win! I'm curious about steering wheel and I know the time will come soon to show what you've got. I'm hoping for a MOMO Grand Prix, but I also enjoy the Nardi Classic. Whatever you choose will be right as it is bespoke by you, for you. I'm guessing you'll have a quick disconnect and no bigger than a 350mm wheel. Keep up the great work!

Lovely work!! Not sure if the gate was necessary... I was digging the Lotus Elan/Elite vibes of the simple ungated shifter. I loved the gearknob though... What kind of aluminium was used on the gate? should be strong otherwise you'll bend the strips of metal between shifts...

The gate is just a guide that prevents miss shifts, there's little to no contact when shifting and fear not those teeth are more than up to the task we've made sure of it

Let the shifter shine! Not full Pagani, but still nice to know that part of that beauriful piece of engineering and machinging will still be visible. That said, I am completely shocked by the amount of weight that you have added to the car just for the old school look of the gated shifter. (Though It is beautiful.) Not having driven one, I don't understand the appeal of the gated shifter beyond aesthitics. As you said, it already shifts great. Do the gates really improve the shifting or just the fun factor?
@OliverPickard
@OliverPickard 10 ай бұрын
The gate is there to prevent miss shifts mostly so you get a perfect shift every time but fear not because the gate spacer has had so much meat removed but underneath and above it weighs next to nothing despite still looking so substantial

Once you pay for the expertise and your time and your father's time, this shifter is probably on par price wise with the ones made by Gordon Murray for the t.50 and t.33. If you are in North America Palatov makes a similar one for his cars, functional, but not nearly as beautiful.

also in terms of hole saws. I was taught in machining class that if you see steam or smoke that means there's no coolant where you want it. With a better understanding of thermal stuff now I would say that technically all the energy that can go into the coolant has done so. So you either need more coolant or less energy.
