In 1986 I produced a record with Bay Area thrash metal band Sacrilege BC for my label Alchemy Records. I talk about that experience and also the music scene of the San Francisco Bay Area at the time.

Sean from SACRILEGE BC here. Watching now. REALLY appreciate this Mark, can't wait to show it to my grandkids hahaha. And yeah Victor saw us at Ruthies pre-signing. And yes we played The Stone a few times, but preferred playing across the street at The On Broadway and The Mab, when we weren't in the Ruthies clubhouse. Also Gary was only 16, I think I was 18? We were all mid to late teens during the recording. Thx Mark! Hopefully someday we get to properly catch up. :) And, sincerely, thx for all the wonderful memories. I'm sorry I was such a goober back then, and thx for putting up with erratic teenage me. LOL!

And yes we practiced at Matt's parents massive Berkeley hills home. They were always incredibly supportive and understanding of a wild gang of kids making "god awful racket" hahaha. Also speaking to the velocity of the playing, the album has been accused of speeding up the tape. We actually were trying to play at a discernable speed, lol. I also think the album itself speaks to not using a click track. There was a thing that was happening then also with bands like ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT, where the "third act" of the songs would speed up just a little, imo increasing the intensity and wrapping things up as sonically violent as possible. BIG LOVE to you Mark. SO much to add to all this dialog. The Alb skins were thanked because they were fully anti-racist and acted as a kind of friendly police force of the scene at the time. Such a turn from what we were used to in the bay when the skins like Mark dagger and Bullet Hole Bo we wreaking havoc in our home scene. BTW VIOLENT COERCION are back together. I bet Ryan would love to speak with you. Me and Ryans memories of hauling CLOWN ALLEY gear before I was in SAC are treasured.

Sacrilege BC, one of the overlooked bands from that era. I'm still honored to have witnessed the old scene. I also remember the Clown Alley burger joint in SF that your band was named after. Excellent burgers! 👍😋

Love the Bay Area recaps, always bring back great memories! I remember in 1983 when music was re-invented with Raven, Metallica, Slayer, and Mercyful Fate. I remember the Metallica gig at the Kabuki (I was 14) - great times!!!

Mordred is a local thrash funk band around back then and still now. You mentioned a record label - you’re probably thinking of Mordam, Ruth Schwartz’s old label that put out albums by the Rhythm Pigs, Victims Family, and some small band Faith No More. Great videos, Marc. Loved Sacrilege. They and Tyrannicide were the true “crossover” bands back then - metal in sound but punk in ethos. Looking forward to a Clown Alley video.

I will never forget stumbling across this record in the store and buying it. from the opening chaos of Azmeroth to the end of victimized, I loved every song, riff, snarl. this record is played often to this day and it's been a huge pleasure becoming friends with Gary and Sean. I got on myspace back in '04 to track down the sacrilege guys and found strephon. I bugged him so much about any demos recorded after too cool to pray that he got Tim to find a copy of the 5 song demo with maggots on it. one of my absolute favorite bands ever. thanks for putting the record out and thanks for the stories that you told on here!

This video bringing out some memories for me. I went to high school with 2 guys from Death Angel, and also Bob the bassist of Paranoia (Alchemy band). I had all the Alchemy releases at one point, and adored Clown Alley and Sacrilege, though I never was able to catch CA live. I was a much bigger Melvins fan though, saw them during their early SF days when 5 ppl would show up to their gigs.

I forgot! And Mr. Deutrom is likely too polite to say it, but...Mark, remeber? You also play on this album. You do the capper solo on the back and forth in WORDS OF GOD. And for anyone reading, Mark took about three seconds, and said "OK" and the tape was rolled and it's...one of the best solos on the album! :)

The 80's thrash scene was the best. I wrote to every band or label address I could find and tape traded, bought fanzines from European metalheads. It was a magical time for new music. I grew up on it and consumed it eagerly. We ended up befriending Pam of the Record Vault through a mutual friend. Our dream as headbanging kids. Having lived that, after all these years, I was never aware of the connection. Fascinating knowledge. Sure, a friend had a cassette copy, I may have a dub of it around I haven't heard in 37 years. I wasn't aware of the production credits. Cool stuff, great to know.

Thanks for watching ! That was definitely a unique and interesting time in counter culture music, and produced one of the biggest bands ever- Metallica. It was great the way punk and metal fused organically to create a whole new genre...a great place for the outsiders from both sides to make something fresh of their own. The stuff like Sacrilege and even Death Angel is still underground in a way.

I remember hearing the cut Azmeroth from this record when it came out on high school radio station KVHS in 86. The DJ had a 2hr show called "thrash Thursday" playing all the bay area bands at that time. Even Demos! Hooked immediately! Went to Rasputin's in Pleasant Hill and bought the vinyl. Would be awesome Mark if you could do a synopsis on Neurosis, RKL and Poison Idea records. All 3 records slayed and a bit ahead of their time! 1985-88 were the best times for bay area thrash punk crossover and what was great about it. None of the bands sounded alike. All had their own sound but had that same intense energy.
