Pinterest can be a lot of fun to browse casually, but trying to chase down sources for what's on it is absolutely infuriating. I've given up using it for anything other than holding pictures I find on my own. Thanks for always talking us through your fitting process!

i'm a little blown away by the elegance of that buttonhole + bar tack solution. i've never been a huge fan of the strength square when i've had stress-bearing slits and that is so much simpler + aesthetically pleasing. also selfishly hyped for the upcoming menswear video(s)!

ah thank you, definitely can't take credit for it though! I learned it from themodernmaker's regency men's shirt video! (and if you're looking for menswear he has lots of very informative videos 😊)

I showed my parents baby bat and they love her as much as I do. The petticoat turned out very cute and very similar to the reference image especially given the difference in materials. I can't wait to see the gown you will make, I already encouraged my friend who enjoyed bridgerton s2 to watch your journey

Regency petticoats are a lot of fun. I cut a super simple one last year, with the front half (half based on side seam placement at the waist, not actually half of the volume or anything) with angled sides, so it helps to create a nice line over the hips, and then the back half gathered only towards the center back. I use twill tape as well. It's easy, there's nothing saying that isn't accurate, and it's what I had. I like for them to sit right underneath the bust line, so everything is lying snug and flat, and so that it starts right where the dress waist line does. I'm going to be attempting to make one for my sister that has a drawstring through the waistband, so that it still lies fairly smoothly, but is adjustable for if/when she gains some weight back. Thankfully, it isn't meant to go underneath her dress, which has a really slim skirt (compared to mine, at least), so it doesn't have to be as slim looking. It's an interesting thought challenge so far, but we'll see how it goes. haha The good news is, with the stiffer finish, it'll help hold the dress skirt away from your legs so you don't trip as much! And depending on what part of the regency you're going for, holding the skirt out a bit more was the goal of the petticoat - also why late 18-teens and 20's dresses have padded hems and the like, they wanted wider but smooth volume.

I’ll have to try the angled sides next time! And that’s a good point about the stiffer petticoats, I definitely have problems tripping over big dresses even with hoop skirts haha

Haven't finished this video yet, but I just wanted to say that after watching multiple videos of you sewing, I have finally started on making my first garment. (I finally completed a rough draft of a trouser block/pattern yesterday). I've only ever used sewing to tailor things (dart + adjust hemlines), so this will definitely be a journey. I don't know that I'll ever try to create a period garment, but I wanted to let you know that you have inspired at least one person to make a garment from scratch :)

I do believe that 'petticoat' in the Regency period, referred to not only the under-garment, but also a 'skirt' with straps, like this one, that would be worn as part of a walking dress, with a spencer. If you look on LACMA, they have a spencer and petticoat ensemble, dated c1815.

Video is awesome as always! I just had to comment to say: Baby Bat's voice sounds just like my cat, Penelope. When I watch your videos at home, if I hear BB's voice (particularly if she isn't onscreen), I take my headphones off to make sure it's not my Penny trying to talk to me, lol. Penny is a tux. :) I also have a black cat named Taco, but his voice is very different from Baby Bat's and Penny's.

Hi! Thanks again for sharing. ☺️ Personally I have made my regency petticoat with the same pattern as the gown with less gatherings on the front, simple sleeves and a lower neckline. Without any support structures in it. I haven't found any reference neither but it works! See you in your next video 😃😃😃 And Baby Bat of course 😻

baby bat strikes again as helper! but this time instead of hoarding stuff she looks at birds (i love the chapter titles you chose here! 'lace', 'cat' and 'more lace' because cat was an important break) looking forward to seeing what you're going to do for the dress! also i noticed around 9:21 that you're stitching the felled-over bit onto the rest - how do you make sure that it is a straight line? mine always go kinda wonky and decidedly not as straight as i want but when i try to look up how to sew a straight line it tells me all sorts of tricks that only work if you basically have no leftover fabric on the right of the needle (does that explanation make sense?)
@moth.faerie
@moth.faerie 2 жыл бұрын
She loooves the birdies haha she chirps at them all day 😊 I line up the edge of the fabric to my presser foot or to my seam guide, the foot I use has a 3/8” seam guide built in so that helps, or I line the inner part of the foot to the folded edge if I’ve managed to get the fold pretty even
@doemtij
@doemtij 2 жыл бұрын
@@moth.faerie the pressor foot is a good idea, i'll try that next time! thanks! i saw the suggestion of the seam guide before but don't see how that works if it's covered by more fabric haha

Quick question: You seem to have a preference for doing your eyelets with button-hole stitches rather than satin; I'm a fairly new sewer so I was wondering why this is? Also, I think I might have accidentally learned how to make a bar from you lol. Thanks!!
@moth.faerie

I do a satin stitch if they’re decorative and a button hole stitch if they’re functional! It’s just bc the button hole stitch is a lot sturdier
