Making a Silver Acorn

A few weeks ago a group of us went to Yosemite National Park where I found this Acorn. I brought it back so I could make everyone silver acorn pendants. Ironically, just the other day I was wondering what all is involved in making a silver acorn because I have an abundant supply of oak trees and thought it would be cool to make one but I had no idea the process was so involved and needed so many expensive tools. I'm so disappointed about it that I will probably never be able to make one unless there's an easier way for a novice silversmith/bench jeweler to make one.😩 Your demo was pretty amazing and informative though so thanks for sharing! 👍🙂

You could make one with delft clay as well! I just wanted a nice mold

Sometimes I get a mold that just wont seem to inject properly….in that situation, I will melt some 100% beeswax and pour it into my mold, instead of trying to inject it. I find that melted beeswax has a viscosity similar to water, and really picks up the details in a mold. I also tap the mold, with a screwdriver or something, while I’m pouring the beeswax, just to move any bubbles that might form. Its not a perfect system….but it works, on stubborn molds.
