Good demo. It would be great to show steps that you only mention, like smoothing the edges of the leaf.

Nice! but how do you 'preserve' the color in the copper for long term. It dissipates with time and atmospheric conditions

I use a clear coat, the one I use is ProtectaClear because it seems to keep the colors the most accurate. Unfortunately any clear coat will change how light refracts off the surface and changes the color. The upside is that the color shouldn't change much if at all after the clear coat is on because it'll be protected from oxidation. Hope this helps, thanks for commenting.

thank you.... but it's ok if the colors change and evolve. Brings even more life into the piece?

It certainly can, but if you've got a specific color in mind for the final project I would do some test pieces and see what colors happen after the clear coat. Best of luck in your endeavors.

I've found that an auto body hammer works well for this as well

What thickness of copper are you using ?

I think that I was using 26 gauge for this (16 mil). You can use thicker or thinner though, thicker being a little bit harder to cut and work.

Thanks for the video. I've been dabbling in copper sheet art and fire painting recently. I was wondering about the durability of the copper coloring from the flame painting. Since copper oxidizes so readily, will those colors last or does the copper have to be sealed?

In my experience, the flame painted colors will last for at least a few years if inside, I still have a few roses from several years ago that were flame painted. The colors have slightly dulled over time though. A lot of creators use a coating to seal in the colors but because any coating will change the way light refracts on the copper, it will change the colors a bit. For example, a shade of purple I like will change to a light brown after coating. Which is a shame. I use rustoluem crystal clear on my roses a lot, and I know people who make copper jewelry use ProtectaClear to coat their copper. I have yet to use it though, as it's a little expensive. If your pieces are going outside or you live in a humid area, I would coat them. I hope this helps.

You should have annealed the copper before you did anything else.

The copper was dead soft before I did anything to it. Fully annealed. Didn't need to do anything.
