Have you ever needed a SUPER dramatic way to spill the tea? Are you the rootinest-tootinest gossiper this side of the Mississippi? Well, this project is for you, ehehehheheh.
Y'all have been sending me these teacup holsters for a couple weeks now, and honestly they are SUPER STINKIN' CUTE... so I wanted to make my own! Aaaand since I'm a cheap-ass b****, I went to the thrift store and grabbed an old leather purse to recycle!
This is a new series I'm doing called "CHALLENGE ACCEPTED", so make send over weird things for me to try to make in the future! I love you all!!!!
Pattern Scans: drive.google.com/drive/folder...
(Note: Pattern pieces are NOT perfect and will most likely need to be futzed around with/trimmed as needed, but hopefully it gives you a head start! Also I'm new to scanning in patterns but scale them up to 8.5 x 11" when printing cuz that's how I made the document)

Something about the outfit you wore with it makes me feel like this is a general "hobbit" accessory for the hobbit intent on "visiting the neighbors." Suppose they already have too many guests? Suppose they only have enough teacups for the family? You never want to put anyone out, do you? And perhaps the best, when you're just "stopping by" and never go indoors, but just have a cup out on the porch because, well, the teapot was already out anyways, and no one needed to fetch you anything! Yes, this is high "visiting" culture apparel.

Hey Rachel, i am so happy that you used thrifted leather for this. I am a Saddler from Germany, and as much as i love cruelty free alternatives, the alternatives you can get today, are not any better for your environment than real leather. Real leather will last a very long time, often the seams are falling apart where the leather is still fine, so you just redo the seam. I love working with leather. It is a waste product of the meat industry, and as long as cows getting eaten, leather is the most efficent product to create out of the hide. I also love to buy old fur coates from thrift stores, and make new things out of it, giving them a new meaning. The production of new fur really makes no sense these days. But what ever, nice video and beautiful Holster, have a nice weekend :)

Fellow leather crafter 🙋 thank you! I wont use "vegan leather" knowing its worse for the environment than real leather. The day everyone stops eating meat, we can discuss alternative methods. Until then - waste not, want not. Happy crafting!

this! I'm vegan and all about cruelty free stuff but when it comes to leather I'm always conflicted bc idk whether it's actually better to buy real or fake leather, but either way the absolute best option is to get it secondhand :) I'd rather buy real leather from a thrift store or something because it lasts longer and I know I'm not letting it go to waste!
@blazertundra
@blazertundra 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah "vegan leather" is usually low quality trash. I have a 5 year old office chair that has had a fairly easy life, and yet it's already peeling like a sunburn and needs some serious attention. Several otherwise good purses have been thrown away because I couldn't repair them. One lucky sewater jacket was saved because only 2 panels were "vegan leather" so I unpicked them and swapped them for cuts from some old denim jeans. The amount of waste and release of plastic into the environment makes all but the highest quality vinyl much worse in every way than natural leather.

Not all vegan leather is plastic. The development of vegan leather has advanced a lot on other materials than plastic.
@emilyporter1186
@emilyporter1186 2 жыл бұрын
@@cyansalvatore6011 they have developed a pineapple leather but it is still not in wide use and is not used in applications meant for real durability as of yet. The vast majority of vegan leather is some form of plastic, often polyvinyl chloride. Polyvinyl chloride is so toxic that workers' bones in their fingertips literally start to dissolve - it's called occupational acro-osteolysis. Some bioplastics have also been found to be more toxic to health than conventional plastics - corn based plastic (which has been considered for vegan leather) for example is very toxic for people and land.
@emilyporter1186
@emilyporter1186 2 жыл бұрын
@@cyansalvatore6011 additionally, even when leather is plant-based, the amount of intensive processing required to make it (depending on the type - corn based leather tends to be this way) contributes further to exposures and health risks for both workers and fenceline communities, along with surrounding wildlife and ecosystems downstream of these operations.

Erin Habecker seconding that. Ive found some decent stuff at my thrift local thrift stores but almost never what I need. Might also have something to do with the thrift stores around me being expensive. So sometimes I do find what I need or could work but no way for that price. Heck. Ive found stuff I recognized from the dollar store there marked for 3. The most insulting was the obviously used and donated to them dollarstore hand towel For 3 Dollars! The one thing I will say for them is they sell walkers and canes for a responsible price. Everything else though?

They sell some nice kitchen bits occasionally and sometimes a juice bit if old wooden furniture. But I never find clothes that either fit or are remotely wearable. The charity shops near me often sell clothes stained or torn so it's really not worth it. For clothes I continuously mend what I have so I buy at the upmost limited intervals. I bought clothes thus year but before that I had bought nothing new for 2 years

There's a really easy way to burnish the edges of the leather so that it doesn't look raw or rough where you cut. Take some water on your finger and drag it across the edge (a small section at a time and not a lot of water) and then take a scrap of canvas cloth and rub it back and forth across the section you're working on very fast. Eventually the edge will become darker and super smooth.

@@lilttlekevin89 These techniques only work on animal leather. There are special products, you can paint the edges of 'leather' products with, though. You might have seen it on belts or handbag straps, maybe. The stuff is similar to acrylic paint, but more durable and resilient. I think, it's called 'leather edge paint' or something similarly obvious.

Alex Scholl after you comment I sort of want someone to make this on the outside of a shoulder bag rather than as a holster. I have this image in my head of someone in a fluffy skirt sitting down on a park bench with their packed lunch in the bag. They first pull out a cloth napkin for their lap (too protect the fluffy skirt). Then comes a thermos. They remove cup and saucer, fill it, put the thermos back, pull out a cloth napkin to place in their lap to protect the skirt then proceed to eat their lunch out of the bag beside them while holder a saucer and tea cup held in their other hand. It would be awesome it see... also probably make for a cool photoshoot set up. Please someone! Do this and share the photos!

Just as a point of interest, if you ever want large pieces of leather without having to actually pay for it, go hunting for old leather couches/ lounge suites. The nasty ones with split seat cushions that are abandoned by the side of the road, or listed in the classifieds as ‘free, just take it away!’. Because while the leather on the cushion and back rest may be nasty, the leather on the back and sides of the couch are usually perfectly fine (and in large useful panels). All you need is a sharp craft knife to cut off the usable bits and you’ve got enough leather to make whatever you want. Plus if you want to deconstruct the whole thing, the rest of the couch innards are usually pretty useful too, strapping, zippers, springs, wood frame, padding… coins, notes, random keys and the occasional earring 😛. So yeah, if you ever want to ‘thrift’ leather, don’t cut up bags, track down an old couch!
