Making a Victorian Corset | Recreating an 1860s Historical Corset for an Alice in Wonderland Cosplay

Part two of my Victorian corset making journey in which I attempt to recreate that famous blue corset from the Victoria and Albert Museum collection. You thought you had seen all my mockups in my actual mockup video, well joke's on you, there are more mockups in this video than there were in the last... oops. Watch me slowly lose my mind over the fitting process than somehow get it back! I think I finally got the silhouette and style lines where I want them and... well the corset is made so there's no going back now I suppose. I used RedThreaded's gored corset pattern as my base but at this point it's been altered so much I'm not sure it's really that great of starting point. This corset will determine the shape for my cosplay of Hannah Alexander's Alice in Wonderland design, at least from the waist up.This is the fourth video in this series and I'm taking my research and inspiration from the mid-Victorian 1860's since that's when Alice in Wonderland was published and the time period that most matches Hannah's design.
In this video I go through corset fitting again and ramble a lot about changes that may or may not have actually done any good. I also go through a whole lot of corset making techniques, including roll pinning and flat lining the layers, measuring and drilling through synthetic whalebone corset boning, inserting gores,, stitching boning channels, and ... a lot more I've forgotten some of it now.

It’s so good to watch a video of a skilled maker. There are so many “let’s just wing it” people here. There are so many times you’d make a decision how to do something and I’m like yasss gurl that’s right LoL

this reminded me a lot of my grandma. not really sure why, honestly, but either way. i want to make some projects with her this summer, she's the one who taught me to sew when i was a kid and i want to sew with her :) i cherish her a lot, and i guess this video just made me a little introspective haha. spend time with the people you love, you don't know when you're going to lose them.

I don't know why I never thought to just add whole sections of boning backing to stitch channels into. I have had issues fitting my corsets in the past too so this video was SO helpful! I'm definitely saving it to reference later (also for your finishing techniques which are SO beautiful). I absolutely do not have the patience to drill holes in my boning though so my hat is off to you! I'm also glad to see someone else who meows back to their cat (especially since my cat also likes to lay on my fabric when I'm trying to cut pieces XD).

That’s a beautiful Victorian silhouette. I have the same problem. I have to shorten my waist almost an inch. And I have very little space between my bottom rib and the top of my hip bone. I really think modern women are built differently. More active childhoods perhaps better nutrition. More muscle mass does affect your bones. We swam, ran, played sports most of our young lives anyway. I think that makes a difference. Oh yes, hardly any of us have “consumption” anymore. Generally, we are healthier. All good things. The corset is absolutely fabulous. I have some black and teal lace somewhere. I’m inspired.

I'm not super worried about the gap being visible since there's so much going over top of it, more that the bones tend to bow if the gap has to travel around curves if that makes sense? Either way, thank you for the suggestion anyways!!

Maybe should add cording to the panels on the tops of your hips if that makes sense, to give it some stiffness. If you don't want it to show, only cord the coutil on the underside and not the fashion fabric on top.

Oh that could work, maybe I'll try that for next time! Thank you for the suggestion!

Ah I completely forgot to add cards to this video, sorry! I first covered it in my Foundations Revealed Couture Techniques video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7iomdFktbLGZJs.html and talked a little more about a different way to do it in my Ghiblicore video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLd-rNNlmq_Wh40.html Thanks for asking and reminding me to fix this!

That corset looks spot on! Love that color! I hope you don't mind my asking, but: how is the bust support with a midbust corset when bending over? Is everything secure? I only made either underbust corsets (no boobage holding) oder overbust corsets (holding stuff up and in), but I never made mid bust corsets for fear of the worst of both worlds (having more curves to fit to my body and not being able to contain the boobs when bending over.
@moth.faerie
@moth.faerie 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! And everything stays pretty secure but I do only wear it with a chemise which is probably helping prevent spillage when I bend over.

I noticed this when you were cutting on the black fabric, and just wanted to ask...but did you cut the pieces on a curve at all? Bernadette Banner noted when she was working on her corset that patterns were laid out in a sort of curve historically, so that the bias pulled with the shape and decreased wrinkles in the finished garment. I was wondering if you followed any sort of logic like that when laying out your pattern pieces. ovo
@moth.faerie
@moth.faerie 2 жыл бұрын
i'm not sure exactly what you mean, sorry! but i cut the pieces with the grain marked on the original pattern.. typically you cut the waist all at the cross grain since that's going to take quite a bit of strain and should definitely not be on any type of bias, however because human waists are not usually completely parallel to the ground that causes the above and below waist parts of each piece to travel through the bias if that makes sense? my wrinkles unfortunately were coming from a fit issue rather than a cutting issue but it's mostly resolved!

That is a tiny waist! 😳 tip from around mid 19th century (which sounds uncomfortable but probably works) is to sleep in your corset (from Ma Ingalls of Little House). It's a gorgeous corset either way and having a bigger gap is fine. That's why they laced shut - so you could wear it even if your size changed.

@@moth.faerie if you use the plastic boning, you can wear it and use a heating pad on it to shape the plastic, then keep it on while it cools down to set it in place.

It's about 24" in the corset! definitely smaller than my natural waist without a corset. I think it's more exaggerated too because my bust is already 38" but it's padded out to about 40" with the corset.
