Wow, this is an exquisite item Tom, well done! You have done it again, and inspired the boys here in Dallas on our next weekend camp project. I am glad you pointed out the Almue Colours, so that the historical detailing is further accentuated. Our best to you and Cornelius... Be well and Go well my friend. (This just in: our mate Bobby has two shield blanks in the clamps drying! Six more to go and the crew is ready for the next bushcrafting weekend after we glue the blanks together and cut the circle!)

Well done, I have been a carpenter and woodworker most of my life but as a lad I learned by making wooden swords shields, spears, bows and arrows ! This was a delightful video

Great instructions. Always enjoy your how to videos. The shield looks great and strong. You should be proud. Last, I enjoyed the Great Beast playing and keeping guard so his viking warrior could focus on his craft and not worry about sudden attacks by the English. SKOL!

G,day Tom ,Geoff the carpenter here from Adelaide , just watching your shield Video, well done for making it with solid timber and Douglas fir/Oregon pine is a good choice and it's what I used for my Viking shields, it's my favourite timber for everything, a good tip is newspaper underneath while glueing so you don't get stuck to the table, well done it's a beautiful magical object, SKAL my Danish brother 🍻

I've heard the Vikings used Linden/lime wood for shields and tapered then so the outside was thinner than the center. Sounded complicated to me, so did the same thing you did here. That backward clamp is genius. Skal!

Hello Tom, you did a very nice job there! But now you also have to say thank you, to your wife, with flowers, going out to eat and everything that goes with it. Why ? Well, at least she allowed you to work in the living room! 😆 I don't quite agree with the hand guard, because I think this hemisphere was intended to cushion the sword's blow so that the blade could not hack the shield in two. I also believe they had 2 straps for the fist and forearm for better handling. Maybe you had longer straps on it so you could carry it like a backpack. But these are just my guesses! But you showed us a great job and what craftsmanship you have. Thanks for that !!! Greetings Walter 👍🏻

historical improvements: Thin the boards to 9mm max and at the edge 3mm use hideglue cover the front side with rawhide do not flame the wood make paint with pigments, egg and linseed oil after painting cover everything with an additional layer of linseed oil do not nail a rope on the edge and do not nail the edge (glue it)

Tom, the center piece is called a shield boss. Awesome shield 🛡 Tom. I am going to make one for decorative use. Also, I have a sword that I need to make a wall bracket to hang it onto.

If you clean those brass rivets and nails, and treat them with gun blue, they will turn a nice brown patina. Nice shield by the way Tom.

That’s really nice Tom. I wanted to do my shield that way but my wood planes need a lot of cleaning up and sharpening due to lack of use. So my shield is just one layer of planks of wood. I didn’t use the rope. In the future I’d like to make a shield like yours. Great job!!! By the way the cartoons at the end remind me of the Asterix and Obelix comics I used to buy and read in England. One of the characters Obelisk is a Viking! - at least that’s what I thought when I was a kid. My dad still has all my books, I’ll have to get them back.

Hello Tom, you really are a master shieldmaker! You could make it a living, it's amazing, I really like it. Thank you for this video, I really enjoyed it and you inspired me to try make my own shield using your methods. Wow Tom. A great deal of information that you provided. The end result is worth the time you spent. Nice that you used a vintage type of plane. Another way of attaching the raw hide edging is to cut it to length and sew it together to make a hoop. Cut it slightly shorter than the out diameter of the shield so you have to force it on. When the raw hide dries it will flatten out and hold the shield boards tightly {you may need to keep the boards flat while the hide dries out?} . Once dried the hide shrinks on to the edge of the board and can stay there without further methods of retention; or you can nail it in place or sew it. Use a 1mm or 2mm drill bit and go around the edge of the shield making holes and then sew the edging in place.

Beautiful work, Tom! TV always portrays the Viking civilization in black, brown and no color when the truth was they had brightly colored textiles and painted wood works and rune stones, etc. So, I loved to see the beautiful colors you picked for your shield!

What a great tutorial! When we move in to our new house (hopefully soon!) one of my projects is to build a primitive shelter by hand at the far end of the garden near the woods. Now I want to make a Viking shield to hang upon it. Thank you for another great video, Tom! With love from the UK.
