Surely, it's a good children's toy. It's so complicated but you did it.

Absolutely perfect as it is! You seem to be a person who likes improvement challenges though. Now, there's a little challenge for you: If you make the gear attached to the top smaller in diametre than the one attached to the handle, you can achieve the effect more comfortably as you will need to turn the handle more slowly.

Yes I agree, I am planning to experiment on gears more in future!

Very nice mate! You are absolutely fearless on the lathe and that was a Texas-size bowl gouge there! And shavings galore! Great job and really entertaining, thanks mate.

Makes me realise how clever and inventive the old guys back in history were. Must have had loads of time to think and experiment. How did they think of that stuff? I must go down another rabbit hole and find out.

@@ScrapwoodCity Wikipedia provides a lot of the history, and yes we can scan thousands of words about it now, covering about 2000 years of historical records going back to Arabic scholars and Chinese artists, but they had to labour in isolation. We can look at You Tube and lazily watch you make one in minutes!

dav snow well said mate, we owe a great deal to those who thought up the things we take for granted - for example, who invented the screw thread? (Actually I suppose it was Archimedes, or some other brilliant Greek, but you get the idea!)
