Dave demos the "line development" technique to make a template to join pipes with a "y" saddle. All you need is 1/8" line graph paper, a ruler, drawing compass and a bit of practice!!!

Exactly what I was looking for. I followed along step by step and my 30 degree template looks exactly right. We'll find out in the morning! Thanks

Good stuff. Searched all over to find a template to do a 45° saddle. You're video worked great. Did the drawing on AutoCad with no problems.

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for. I want to make a rocket stove using round pipe. I remember doing similar drawings when I was in high school a long long time ago but couldn't remember how to set it up. I didn't understand why you were using the inside diameter at first but then I figured out that it must be because its the inside diameter that contacts the other pipe

Lost in space at 13 minutes. I can relate to that. We have contractors who think outside the box and then you have what we call in Australia he cowboys. Well, I'd say 90percent of construction is cowboys. Great video thanks for spending your time doing this.

At a little over 5 minutes you mentioned you don't have to have advanced degrees in trigonometry to do this. That makes me think about the Giza pyramid built some 12,000 years ago or more. Architects and engineers still use the concept for their designs and mentioned they would be happy if their work was half as good. Certainly the level of accuracy in the megalithic structures goes beyond what we are able to achieve today. I'm in awe. Recently the British took some high level equipment to Egypt. They had ultrasonic instruments that could record what is underground also measure for straightness on each level of 60 tonne limestone blocks laid. What they found out was there was only a slight deviation from one end to the other. What they did fail to mentioned was the deviation was to the same scale in relation to the curvature of the earth. Let that sink in for a little. I just don't know why the conformed narration wants to keep this from the public.

I'm confused to why you say you have to use the ID or it won't fit. I think you should use the OD but then you have to bevel the inside. Right?
@joshharper6791
@joshharper6791 6 жыл бұрын
Good question! This technique is used on sheetmetal as well as pipe. If we use the O.D. for a layout, there will be a lot of grinding of pipe wall to feather the surfaces to meet. Usually on pipe with any substantial wall thickness, a perpendicular cut using the I.D. will leave the edges of the wall exposed for a full penetration weld with minimal grinding needed for a good fit up- For sheet metal, theres no need for and O.D. vs. I.D.. Dave
@robertmetalmanable
@robertmetalmanable 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've done sheet metal and insulation work for years and the last few years i got to apply the layouts for big pipe fittings. Some of the pipe had 3/4 wall thickness and with using the ID for the layout the long point would be a lot shorter. I actually made an OD and ID patterns to help with getting the right bevel. This was on a 30 degree miter. With that much wall thickness just an ID would have left too much of s gap.

Just keep playing it thru it'll come to you. I've done sheetmetal layout for 29 years and most of the intricate layouts i would eyeball and mostly ended up close as hell. But after watching this guys videos its like a flood gate off utter duhhhh opened up! I can't believe how simple all these layouts actually are! Keep in mind he says 2-D a few times before the 7:43 mark. Watch his hands as he calls out each set of marks. Good luck brother!

+yaishk Nope! For an offset connection I go high tech and use a program like "pipe fitter" to layout the connections. The template for those are weird looking, asymmetrical. Luckily, that type of connection is rare.
