$400 non refundable application fee, when my daughter thought of applying. Almost certainly much higher now. Acceptance rate for the undergrads is less than one percent. MILLIONS of dollars per year, for a university with one of the largest endowments in the world. My daughter was Valedictorian of the fifth largest public high school in the state of Missouri. Heavy volunteer for many charities, and FORTY hours of college credit in high school. Yet...she had no chance to be admitted to Harvard. Too many legacy scholarships, and I wasn't wealthy enough to purchase an admission for her. SMH.....

In my day, all we got was a letter in the mail, the thickness of whose envelope was a good indicator of what it contained. But the, in those days if you had an 800 LSAT and a GPA above 3.9 with a major in a rigorous discipline you probably knew when you sent in the application that you were going to get in to Harvard and Yale and that if you were rather below those objective measures your chances were not particularly high.

@@Matt-rg1hj The flip side of my comment was that several years ago at an alumni event, someone who claimed to be "on the inside" (though I doubted it) sauntered over to me and, apparently thinking that this would be a good introductory line to impress me with how high the standards are these days, told me that there is no way I would get in to HLS today. I asked why she had said that, and she answered that it's just statistics, that it's much harder today. Then I told her about the 800 and the 3.9+ and the master's degree in physics at age 20 . . . and about making Law Review on grades. She doubled down and said that for sure they're not looking for pointy-headed nerds from New York. I hope she was not speaking from a position of knowledge.

There is, but the rest of the world doesn’t call you when you get admitted. Most universities just send you a letter in the mail. The personal touch with the phone call is above and beyond. It’s not about how big the world is, it’s about who makes themselves stand out in the world.

I've never understood America's system about education and school, why should socioeconomic factors play a role, what if you can't pay that much, and if you can't pay that much you might as well lose the motivation to try and succeed. In my country everything is free, you even get paid to go to school, you can get about 500 USD a month for free. Or you can take a big loan and pay back in 25 years + you get the student aid with it also. I get about 1000 a month and I took 3000 USD in loans. I study math and physics and I'm also working on a research study.

I imagine a lot of thing have to fall into place, this work out. Mostly. You have to be a certain, specific 'type.' What if you more talent and blackballed? Professor get green light from some source and you get marked down? Or. Teaching aid see you talent but you testing for Professor notice you and it the TA and you get mark down. That why, if you great at your profession, 20+ year down the line from Harvard Med School or Harvard Law School, you a rarity. No one gonna protect you and luck become a function of larger world. What happen if you know highest law?

I think like this. I went to school for 9 years and a residency after high school to become a doctor. Not everyone drinks the feel-good woke kool-aid, but sadly, a loooot of people do.
