I love watching Bill work with foam.....but as an expert he does make it look deceptively easy. Seeing Jen take on such an ambitious first project and how she dealt with problems actually gives a noob foam smith like me more confident to try my own project. More Jen videos please :)

What I love about this is that she is still figuring stuff out. Where adam is the old master who may not know exactly but has enough experience to know the methodology to get results. I love the contrast. would love to see more of her.

@@schac_attack Everyone starts somewhere, as for the cap, I was thinking about putting the hair into a top bun and sorta locking it in that way also gives you a more uniform base as day to day your pinning could change.

This was a fantastic build and a fantastic build video! Look like Jen had a lot of fun putting this all together. Great problem solving along the way. Loved the explanations as we went along. The tip on making more organic curls was great! And MAN does the final product look amazing! Reminds me I want to do a Medusa wig and costume someday. Look forward to more Jen builds in the future!

Great job!!! Teachable Moment: For proper fitting, however you preset (braid, pin or pin-curl) your hair to take measurements or make a mold, you need to duplicate it for the final fitting. Wig cap are definitely your friend.

What a great process video. I love watching the crafting experts like Bill and Britt at Punished Props and Steve over at SKS Props, their years of experience really shine when they make something beautiful out of the most basic tools. BUT I also love seeing someone who is experienced at crafting but not at a particular medium working THROUGH the process. Making mistakes, solving problems, redoing things, and learning from the process, it really shows what this kind of work is like. And for people out there who have never made something like this, it's so encouraging for them to see someone who's highly skilled try something new and eventually succeed. Great Video, Jen! You may now eat cake.

I'm watching Jen wrap up her head in sticky plastic wrap and I'm reminded of all the Mythbusters episodes where they had a hard time getting something out of a silicone mold they were making of it.

That's fabulous Jen! Well done! Just one point from someone who did something similar a while back - the main support structure being in EVA foam may become problematic as it gets warmer, from your head, ambient temp, under lights etc. - the piece may start to sag. If you could replace, or bolster the big central EVA pieces with lexan or something similar and *lightweight* the piece will be more robust.
@negotiableaffections3 жыл бұрын
Not just in at the deep end [getting sculptural 1st time out with EVA] but with full Diver's lead weights and boots! But like Houdini, you've risen to the top with flair; and not let the material constrict your creativity. Having 'sculpted' EVA myself [Alex Mercer's arms from the game, Prototype] I started with Bill [& Brittany] Doran and Evil Ted's videos and 'got creative'. As you say you can develop your own techniques to suit your project. I am extremely impresssed with your unique style in EVA - the helmets that rule cosplay; with so many patterns available ARE a great starting point for the beginner but 'outside the box' is a lot more fun!

the headcap creation reminded me of when I made a Corey Taylor Slipknot mask when I was 13 (based on his first mask). To get the form I draped an old shirt with eyeholes over my head, and wrapped my entire head and face with duct tape. Of course, I didn't think too far ahead and was flying solo with no prior mask making experience. My mom ended up having to cut a slit in the back of it so I could get it off my face. I did a lot more work to it after that, but it actually ended up working out really well. Nice to know I was in a reasonable ballpark with problem solving it even as a kid with no experience.

Neat project. I may never do one, but I love the techniques used and hope to work them into things I do. One small recommendation - I'd get one of those can-gun paint can trigger and handle adapters. They give you a LOT better control when trying to spray stuff. I prefer the design of the one made by Rustoleum, and it works with almost every can I've tried.

Amazing project and result - especially for your first time using EVA foam! It may have only saved a few ounces, but you might consider cutting some skeletonizing holes in the 10mm foam understructure if it doesn't compromise the stiffness too much. Clearly not as a retrofit to this project, but might be helpful in future projects! Keep up the great work!
