In this Rugby Analysis I take a look at Shape off 9 with Ioan Lloyd running the show for Bristol Bears v Bath Rugby. The positioning of Lloyd, the pass from Afoa, the offload from Hughes and the incredible pace and support play from Lloyd make this otherwise basic play a line breaker!

Stumbled across your channel last night and subscribed immediately. I love my rugby have done for as long as I can remember, and i have a damn good basic understanding of the game, but I love watching videos like this that help me to understand what teams/players are fully doing. So keep it up man. And would be good to see linger videos, and more vodeos about the tactics used my specific teams, and more videos about specific players explaing what it is that makes them so good at what they do. Cheers.

Great job again! Just a interesting fact about Bristol you can mention in the future, Pat Lam is a big fan of Wigan Warrior attacking pattern. What does that mean? Attack should be brought to simplicity. There is not more simpler way of creating a numerous advantage than doing a single loop. This kind of attack is very typical to Lam’s teams. For which pattern you need a very well balanced fly-half with a decent footwork so he can accelerate into the space for split second. Great video, great depth and amazing energy you bring to everything you do Sir! Love your work. Keep it up!!!

That's really interesting, Kostadin, thank you for that. As you say Wigan are build in effective simplicity, but with incredibly high skill level and fitness! I didn't realise Lam was a fan of theirs! I try to bring my love of the game to the screen and to add a bit of detail to balance out some of the more general stuff out there!

Awsome as always Geraint, the pods are normally used as a rest or reset moment for the attack, but Bristol used them to try to break all the time. Thanks again for you great work!

Thank you, Tomas! Really appreciate your support! I agree, so many attacks don't use shapes to their potential or indeed go looking for opportunities! Nice to see Bristol bucking the trend.

Great analysis and presentation. Would you say that it was the threat of Lloyd during Afoa's pass to Hughes that fixed the corner defender enough for Hughes to get an inside shoulder? Also, thanks for defining terms like "corner" for us on the more novice side of things.
@GeraintDaviesGDD
@GeraintDaviesGDD 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, that's really kind of you! There's a few things that contribute. Because it's only a 2 man pod the defenders would've been a bit more confident that they could cover it so were committed to the tackle, Mercer would've been drawn by the outside attackers so didn't want to get too narrow, and yet had to hold because of Lloyd behind. Then the timing of Afoa's pass was literally perfect! Even Hughes' line does a cracking job of just tightening the gap and forcing an inside shoulder tackle. Great awareness from him to turn out for the offload. Lovely play all around!

the short (well timed) pass from Afoa was class. Do you think that's an essential skill for front rowers these days? especially with how often they find themselves in pods of three or congested space?
@GeraintDaviesGDD
@GeraintDaviesGDD 3 жыл бұрын
Absolute quality wasn't it! Definitely essential in my opinion. Players like Kyle Sinckler, Jamie George, Dane Coles etc. have really changed the way front rowers are looked at. Afoa being able to give that kind of quality pass, with that kind of deception really sets him apart. Makes a huge difference to an attack!

With most defenses set up like league blitzing or coming hard and fast off the line whatever you want to call it mostly committing sometimes literally 2 players at a ruck while everyone in a line awaiting next attack .. I've seen it with Wales many times when in possetion that they keep going from pod to pod straight into collision of a well organised defensive line that has numbers .. I don't tend to see enough of the attacking 10 mixing it up with chips over or through a blitz defense to keep opposition guessing or just the team in possetion picking up and going from the fringes of ruck to commit defenders so space is created out wide for attack .. it's not just Wales it's other teams to where I've seen teams go through anything from 10 to 30 phases against Wales and going nowhere against well organised Welsh defense not commuting numbers to rucks happy for opposition to have the ball because Wales confident in defense eventually attack coming to nothing and me thinking how pointless all that effort was by attack team.. for me there's not enough heads up rugby these days by some outside halfs.. fin Russel did it against Wales blitz defense 1st half leading to try with chip over rush defense.. I think the more you keep a defense guessing who doesn't commit to the ruck ? Pick up and go with some chips or grubbers through defensive line is the way to keep mixing it up .. but do see a lot of just pod after pod multiple phases going nowhere and I don't get it
@GeraintDaviesGDD
@GeraintDaviesGDD 3 жыл бұрын
Variety when running shapes is key. A lot of international rugby is about playing the percentages, but to really make headway there’s got to be a bit of a different approach. Finns chips are a good example!

Still not too late for Harry Randall to turn away from the dark side & throw his lot in with Wales......Eddie will end up giving him one cap, just to tie him down. I bet Eddie is also regretting not picking Sheedy & Johnny Williams now, not to mention Tompkins & Ross Moriarty.
@GeraintDaviesGDD
@GeraintDaviesGDD 3 жыл бұрын
Randall is quality but I rate Hardy, Williams, Davies and Webb ahead of him! Sheedy would never have played senior for England I don't think. And I'm 100% certain the Ross wouldn't (I was his academy coach at U18!), he only played 20's as he thought it would be better for his career in the short term!
