Geraint Davies Rugby Coaching & Analysis

3 жыл бұрын

This Rugby Attack Analysis of Ospreys Edge Shape also looks at the Blocker Play in Rugby Union, and covers some of the features that have contributed to Ospreys improvement in the 2021 Guinness Pro 14 season. Connacht will want to consider their defensive set up as their own hold/fold decisions at ruck contributed to their downfall!
Dan Lydiate, Justin Tipuric, George North, Dan Evans and Stephen Myler all play a massive part in making the try happen!

Ah that’s great to hear. One of my main aims is to help people learn something new! You make a good point though, I should have been more explicit. Great analysis, thanks Geraint. Interesting point on the 'sacrifice' of getting caught behind the gain line to entice the fold error and make the wide space - we're so often obsessed with go-forward that this would be easily missed. Also 💯 agree on work rate off the ball in attack - it so often makes the difference!

The one area that confuses me and no doubt loads of fans as well , is the interpretation of the " high" tackle. We had two perfect examples of this issue in the tests between New Zealand and Ireland. The first incident involved Angus Ta'avao who received a red card for a tackle on Garry Ringrose. The next incident sees Andrew Porters tackle on Brodie Retallick, for which he gets a yellow card. One can argue the pros and cons of both incidents but they are in the past , what's done can't be undone. The thing is that both refs, Jayco Peyper and Wayne Barnes are both very experienced officials and are particularly so at officiating between NH and SH teams, I don't understand Wayne's explanation that Andrew Porter " absorbed" the collision ? If he did it led to him to leave the game and a failed HIA. I didn't hear any reason from Jayco as to why he made his decision apart from the input from the TMO. As the rules stand regarding the high tackle the IRB have not managed to find consistency among their match officials. I suppose my question is more directed at the IRB rather than you Geraint but I would like to hear your and others views on this thorny subject.

I seem to have missed this message, Andy! Stephen Myler really does run the show but he's got excellent support from North on one wing and Protheroe on the other and Dan Evans at 15. They are running a set pattern and players looked very comfortable with the set up! So a mix of planned action and reaction!
@andrewcorrigan6338
@andrewcorrigan6338 3 жыл бұрын
Got to say Conor Fitzgerald makes contact on North but doesn't put him down. Really needs to follow through and put his man down, North wouldn't have been there to collect that final pass if he did. Lovely play by Ospreys. Myler is class always seems to have more time on the ball than he should.
@GeraintDaviesGDD

I think Fitzgerald would’ve been pleased that North passed 😂 good point though. Myler had been a big part of Ospreys improvement, a class act!
@peake2955

Hi Geraint love your work! One part of modern defence I don’t like is the winger coming in to take the inside attackers and trying to shut them down but in doing so giving his opposite time and space with the ball when quick hands beat him. I understand lots is happening in this try and it’s not all his fault but the 11 comes up empty handed and I think he should have been a bit more patient and relied in inside defenders more. Basically I’d rather see him wait and take someone than jam in and take no one, even if he gives up space in doing so. I’d rather the cover defence (there were 2 of them) take the inside attackers and let 11 stay on his wing; let fast man stay on fast man! By jamming in, the winger doesn’t get to use his position specific winger skills of using the space between himself and the sideline/goal line. What do you think?
@GeraintDaviesGDD
@GeraintDaviesGDD 3 жыл бұрын
I can see the sense in what you’re saying, & I think a more patient ‘jockey’ would’ve been a better option. He’s essentially gone for an all or nothing, mainly because he’s numbers down, spacings are too big & he’s just wanting to shut the attack down ASAP. But players like Myler read those situations really well. I should’ve mentioned in the video, but off the edge, Connacht have 3 blind side, which puts them numbers down from the off!
@peake2955
@peake2955 3 жыл бұрын
@@GeraintDaviesGDD thanks Geraint. Always hard when numbers are down and dealing with an overlap. he could have come in off his wing enough to try to force the attack to make a play but without committing (as the 11 did) i.e. still stayed alive in defence. It takes discipline from the winger but I would like them to always be thinking about the numbers out wide and how far wide they are and let the cover defence take the inside attack (so the cover doesn’t have to cover so much ground) - until the winger is certain the cover can’t get there and they need to make a tackle.
@GeraintDaviesGDD
@GeraintDaviesGDD 3 жыл бұрын
@@peake2955 Yeah that's a fair point. Those make or break tackles sometimes pay off, but can make you look very silly when they don't!

And I would like your views on why the hooker isn’t given autonomy over the decision-making and execution of the calls at the line-out?
@GeraintDaviesGDD
@GeraintDaviesGDD 3 жыл бұрын
Calling a lineout is a really stressful task & is a specialist role in itself. Even at the very highest levels most players won't have the knowledge/confidence/awareness to call the lineout. The hooker of course has an incredibly important task in hitting their jumper & so adding the stress of calling the lineout is likely to negatively impact on their skill execution. So they get to the mark, generally first, take the call & then just focus on hitting the jumper!

I know it's a high level of fitness and knowledge But how to set a structure or create that for a coach point of view. Normally it's a pod just truck it to contact
@GeraintDaviesGDD
@GeraintDaviesGDD 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Craig, good question & that really is the most interesting bit. It comes down to helping players see the big picture of what the framework is for. When we coach shape, do we start with option 1 being carry into contact? If so then that probably says to the players that they do that as their default. So play games, do video reviews, practise activities, all with a focus on moving the ball & linking shapes together!
