When you have just convinced someone that the stuff from that came from the "Satanic Panic" was a bunch of hooey, make their first campaign Descent into Avernus! Because messing with people is fun.

Devil's aren't in any rush, they've got eternity' I love it, that's exactly how I play my devils. They start out by being very friendly and reasonable, being seemingly open and honest. Eventually the players start to trust them implicitly and do little quests for them without asking *why* the devil wants this mcguffin or *why* the devil wants to help them with this dungeon run. Once the devil has everything it needs and when it is 100% sure there is nothing the players could possibly do they turn on the players in a dramatic betrayal scene in a bid for power. Feels good when a plan comes together.

Growing up playing planescape campaign in 2e, one of the biggest issues I had with this setting was vague info on like every plane in multiverse. Your starting point was probably Sigil and be honest was no real reason to ever leave that city. This method of a reason to be in outerplanes and how they do it is something missing back then

So, I have never played D&D in any capacity (I actually just saw it on Community then suddenly took to it like Abed took to Cougar Town). I also don't really have any exposure to infernal realms or fantasy outside of the main stream and don't know a single movie or book this video mentioned. However, I am four days away from Session 0 of my running this campaign as DM for a group of experienced players. This video was extremely helpful. I have been watching various DM prep videos for BG: DiA and watched some play throughs, and am now trying to make some big decisions on what I want in the campaign before we finalize characters. Hearing the comment about the possibility of making the devil's pact or war machine the backbone of the story was very helpful. This top-down view really helped me conceptualize my vision of the world for this story - I really needed that moment to make this all click in my brain. Plus, now that I know I will be rewriting history, I will make sure to record the sessions lol. Oh and that devil roleplaying advice is perfect perfect perfect. Thank you

Hello! Community + dnd a lady after my own heart. sounds like the pathway i took though i was introduced to dnd first. In terms of alignment, usually 5e players dont really make use of that as most ppl tend to play morally grey characters. Makes for more complex storytelling. However if you really wanted to play to alignments, there are several charts on pinterest and the like that help w simplifying the definitions behind the alignments

How you were explaining the “girl in Kansas” analogy, that’s I how I felt when I started reading this campaign. I am normally a really nice person, so playing evil devils and demons is opposite of my normal character. As a DM, I am looking forward to expanding my abilities with this campaign.

Videos like these where developers can go further into how to adapt adventure books into other campaigns are great. Would love to see more content like this around the release of new adventures, it gives DMs like me who aren't necessarily interested in running the adventures as written better insight into whether the purchase is worth it.

I'd have to say that while I love the source book it is almost certainly not really a good first adventure in D&D. Players that have some experience in D&D sure, but I'd not want to spring it on them totally unawares even then. With that said, I want to reiterate that I just love Love LOVE Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus, well done!

@@ampz1466 generally the role of a good DM is to do all the heavy lifting for you. Your main job really should just be to have fun. Try it out, and while I hope everything is magical, be sure afterwards to voice any concerns with the DM. If they are worth their salt they will listen and address anything needed.

I have heard some things about this book that, I have to admit, disappoint me and make me hesitant to purchase it. One, apparently the book says that souls who have been denied by their god go to the Nine Hells, which is not consistent with established canon (they are either judged by Kelmvor, or end up on the Wall of Faithless and False. I am all for getting rid of the Wall, but have an explanation for that. Souls aren't just sentenced to the Nine Hells). It seems like canon is being treated willy-nilly these days. Yes, DMs can pick and choose, but they have always been able to do that. I realize that Avernus hasn't really been established, so there is room to develop it, but other lore has. I also heard that poor Jander Sunstar is being tormented in the Hells. Players can free him, but it still saddens me that he is essentially stuck there. I haven't actually seen the book yet, so feel free to correct me, but this is what others have told me.

Since they never bothered playtesting the Baldur's Gate portion of this adventure, based on my experience and the few youtube channels covering it like roll20, my advice is skip Baldur's Gate. It was built for lv3-4 players not 1-2. This tact on BS is a hard pass for anyone that wants to actually enjoy a solid campaign without resorting to house rules & DM divine intervention tactics to get by(although that didn't help us even). Skip Baldurs Gate, it is unbalanced, doesn't truly tie into the actual story, and will save you allot of time in an already very long campaign.

My problem with Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus is that half of it still takes place in the Forgotten Realms. Greyhawk, Nentir Vale, setting-agnostic, or a new setting. All of these are better choices.
