Hello and welcome!
Join us today as we work on our version of an old fashioned fruit basket or hamper. Using white pine from our sawmill and cherry veneer that we cut on the veneer mill at last year's tractor show, we make a round, tapered basket modeled after the style that has long been used for harvesting and transporting various kinds of produce. These baskets were once mass produced in the northeastern states and were used for harvesting grapes, tomatoes, and other kinds of fruits and vegetables. Simple, durable, and easy to stack, they remained in used for many years, and some examples of the originals still remain for us to study and try to duplicate.
These fruit baskets are just one example of the wide variety of baskets, boxes, and other crafts that can be made from the veneer that we turn on our antique veneer mills. Much of the equipment we use is over 100 years old, and all these years later, it still works just as well as it did back then, and just as well if not better than a lot of their more modern counterparts. What do you think of these baskets? What would you use them for if you had one? What other basket or veneer related videos would you like to see in the future?
Thank you so much for watching!
