We're making some progress on the plot today 🤭 (I know.. there's still a lot of work to be done... 😵).
🌷 This was filmed January 30th & February 1st
🌷 The plot is around 5.5m x 12.5m and the greenhouse is 8x6 ft
🌷 I'm based in South Wales
🌷 I've been gardening for about 3 years from my tiny patio garden.. so this going to be a big step up!

The best advice that I ever heard is that when it comes to the rules of gardening, there are no rules. Do what makes you happy. I’m invested in seeing your garden grow.

Or rather not , as it was their dumping ground. /s In all honesty, I think the allotment owners should arrange for all the rubbish to be taken away as they shouldn't have let it get to such a state in the first place.

That wooden frame thingy at 7:00 is the bottom half of an end over end churn used for making butter. When I was a lad we all had to take turns winding the handle, under the watchful eye of my grandmother. Slowly making my way through your back catalogue and very impressed with your progress.

I think the ground you are working on knows that FINALLY someone has turned up who actually cares about it. I hope whatever is going on in the background to make all that noise finish their project, and the area becomes quiet and calm. Well done!

Unfortunately it looks like the roots under the weed supressing membrane are those of couch grass a very pernicious weed. Don't chop it up as each section would go on to produce a new plant, you need to continuously and carefully dig it out over a long period of time. What an amazing amount of work you managed to get through well done, it is looking so much better 👏👏👏👏😁

Seren, I'm interested in your experience in the coming months, as you watch all the weeds and other stuff you're gathering up go through a compost process. I suspect you'll need to add substantial amounts of fresh green plant material or manure in order to fully break down those woody roots you're dealing with. I wish you weren't halfway 'round the world, or I'd bring over a truckload of horse manure to get the process started for you! 💩 The horses at our house are the BEST garden assistants! The entire garden is powered by horse manure. Cleaning up after five horses every day has made me the KING of compost! You might consider using parts of your plot to intentionally grow crops with weed-like qualities, so you have plenty of excess green material you can add to your piles later. I let weeds grow around the garden for weeks at a time, then I go around the garden and harvest the weeds on the day I turn the compost pile. I mix the green weeds into the compost pile to help break down the woody material. I've followed the same process you are using, just laying down cardboard and compost. It has worked well for me! I've been using that method in the same garden plot for five or six years now.

The “big scissors” are shears and they’re for trimming shrubs or topiary. You’re doing the right thing just scraping up the dead stuff and composting it. Those bamboo canes, if they cannot be used for beans, can be chopped up for a bug hotel 🪳🪲🪰🐝🐞

I love stories like this and I have subscribed and will follow you with interest. I have an allotment and love growing my own vegetables. You will get so much advice from other allotment holders who will mean well, but their advice will quite often be contradictory! The weed membrane and astroturf are your best friends at the moment because of the weed suppressing they have done. You are lucky to have the greenhouse which we are not allowed unless it has plastic glazing which goes opaque after a while. Good luck with your allotment Seren, don't rush and do too much but tackle little bits at a time and get planting as soon as the weather allows so that you can have the excitement of watching your first plants grow.

Brilliant job.. you'll remember that! For the digging out it might not be too bad... turf ypu can make into a pile cover and in 9 months it'll be compost.. lovely stuff. You might research a matock.. we have heavy soil and it uses the weight and ypu can just swing it and it cleaves through the roots and soil.. saves your back muscles!

@notthecheshirekat2596
@notthecheshirekat2596 Ай бұрын
So, I’m American too and this is what I’ve deduced on the allotment thing: they don’t have large plots that their homes are on so don’t have big yards to put a garden in there. They are able to rent these allotments to garden in that are away from their home. Apparently they are in high demand judging by the wait times to get one. I’m guessing it’s several acres of land owned by the city government that is subdivided into allotments for rent. Don’t take this as gospel truth though, it’s just what I’ve deduced from watching British/UK shows and videos. 😊

@notthecheshirekat2596 Pretty much exactly right. The UK, especially England, has such a high population density. This is especially true when you only consider the areas actually populated/developed. We simply don't have the space for big houses/gardens in many places, unless you have millions to spend. The allotments are local council property that you can rent (pretty cheap).

I hope they didn't plant plastic flowers or tinned veggies too? 🙄 You are a brave and determined young lady! Were they attempting above ground gardening? Yeah, that's what they were doing. Rather than dig a garden, they put bags and ground sheets down and put compost on top of it. Nice job! What a huge amount of work you've accomplished!
