I like Boxwood for bonsai. Ever since I found one bare rooted and with about a dozen good leaves on a compost pile, I have been having great success in bringing it back to life. Dry bare roots filled a a 5 gallon bucket. Soaked roots in the bucket, then into a “large” plant box. And in 3 years stepping the pot size down to its current pot - a 12” mica drum pot. It is still slowly adding oodles more leaves and new branches. Thank you for this video. Looking forward to followup videos on these two bonsai.

I need help. I am fairly new to practicing Bonsai. I am using nursery stock shrubs, like a Boxwood or a Juniper. I’ve read a lot about Bonsai, what you are supposed to cut, what to leave, and I have watched a lot of videos, but by the time I get finished I’m pretty much left with a bare stick for a tree. I’m missing something or I’m just not understanding the art. Can you give me any suggestions or pointers or anything? I love Bonsai and I want to be successful, but I feel like all I do is destroy shrubs. I’m frustrated, but I don’t want to quit trying because I love Bonsai so much, but I also don’t want to continue destroying perfectly good shrubs because I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Thank you, and I love your videos. You make it look so simple. Why can’t I do it?

May I suggest you join a local bonsai club so that you can get the basics first? Or plow through my videos and test out the techniques I share. Nothing come easy, you have to put effort to learn. If you have any specific questions, you can email me at hello@bonsaiheirloom.com and I will do my best to help! I killed a lot of trees when I first started doing bonsai, so you shouldn't feel discouraged. Keep going!

@@bonsaiheirloom oh, thank you so much! I love your videos. You literally work magic when you create. And all the trees you have growing on your property must be a constant source of joy and peace. A lot of work, but I’m sure a lot of joy, too. It’s so beautiful where you live.

OMG, I'm wondering how old these boxwoods are ? It must take quite a number of years to reach that size

This one is about 25 years old...planted when we built our home. The big one from my previous video is 24+20 years, close to 50 years old.

Look for the feature that you can start sawing at low speed, and speed up when you press hard. They are all good.

Do boxwood grow in winter?

Not much, I suppose. Japanese boxwood does turn yellow, which recovers quickly when it warms up.

Spring is the best, late fall second best--actually at any time before it gets too hot is fine. Always cut back branches to compensate for root loss.
