The make the chain driven differential, I used gears taken from the BMW e46 2.0d differential. The differential can drive vehicles such as trikes, go-karts, buggy and other vehicles that will be powered by a motorcycle engine.

Welcome to our world of engineering and innovation, sure we make it look simple by showing results and some processes in between but our minds work differently to most with knowledge of materials,machinery,and step by step processes to create items. It's a craft we hold dear in our hearts and nothing can stop us because we fully understand that without us whom do this nothing moves forward nor gets repaired. We're a breed of our own who thrive on reinventing the wheel 💪

Thanks for this... I'm building a very similar design of diff, but at a much smaller scale... It's for an HPV/ small EV with a power of under 2kW... My output shafts are 12mm in diameter, the outer casing is 70mm in diameter, with only 2mm wall thickness... You validated a lot of my design choices!

That was amazing to watch, a lot of thought and accurate measuring went into that one ! that looks like an ideal dif for a chain driven bike trike ! With the disc set up it looks like the jag 4.2 rear end i was using for a rover v8 trike i was building some years ago, that would have been ideal as a engineered minimised alternative as had to cut down the length of the drive shafts to fit 15" wide back wheels ;)

I had to watch this twice it was so amazing. It looks like your diff is leak proof so you might be able to put diff oil in it. When I did mine on my trike I had the prop shaft input flange cut into a sprocket but then I had to also use a bevel gearbox from a farm implement ( Rated 70 HP). That was ten years ago and it's still going around England somewhere.

Heat should not be a problem since there is no hypoid (ring and pinion). You should consider adding a ounce or two excess CV grease. It will find its way around as the spiders and side gears rotate. Then you can rifle bore one of the side flanges to vent into the CV without worrying of cross contaminating the lubricants.

The thing that separates this differential drive from what most are typically used to seeing is that it's chain drive, not shaft. This eliminates the parts that create the most friction and heat, the hypoid gearset. Second, it also eliminates preloaded pinon and carrier bearings, which is the second most heat generating parts in a typical differential. Unless this differential is used in a manner opposite of a typical differential, minimal heat will be generated because spider gears are not designed for high speed rotation and by nature of design do not create much heat unless high speed rotational differential speed is stained between one side and the other for longer periods of time.

If i didn't just spend a whole lot of money on kart parts, trike parts, steel and then save for a couple more years, i might of had enough to make a tenth of the down payment needed to buy a lathe so i can build a differential. Thanks guy, i truly feel inspired 😅

This was a beautiful project. I do not know its intended use, but watch out for internal pressure from heat blowing out your seals. Most diffs have a pressure releasing vent for this reason. It lets the pressure out when it gets hot, and it prevent a vacuum when it is cooling.

He could just use heavy grease instead of differential oil/lubricant. He wouldn't have to worry as much about heat unless he planned on driving something fast. Or he could use bentonite grease. That stuff never seems to heat up. It's found in ride on mower transmissions in case anyone's wondering.
@ramishrambarran3998
@ramishrambarran3998 Жыл бұрын
@@TheCommo81 It is not the oil or grease heating up that will cause the problem. It is the AIR inside. It expands and contracts with heat and cold, causing pressure/ vacuum as the case might be. All differentials should have a vent !

Thank you 😁 Yes, in some lawn mower tractors there is a differential which is driven by a chain with a separately attached gearbox, my neighbor has one and he changed the seals in it and I saw what was inside and it seems to me that quite a lot of power can be picked up this differential :) But it is difficult to find such a mechanism that you can buy it in a few models of tractors, it was mounted, So if you come across such a mechanism again, I recommend you buy it as it probably wouldn't cost much:)

Awesome build. I want to build a 4wd go-cart with less than 10hp. Eventually, just because, I might try to turn it into an EV go-cart. Instead of trying to mount 2 motors, one and chain drive F & R differentials. 2 changes I would do on your build. 1, I suspect, was just not noticed during assembly. One pillar block has grease fitting facing the opposite way. It is easier to grease if both are in the same direction. The other is I would have put a bit more grease on the inside, not packed, but a bit more. All in all, it was a great build. Wish I had your lathe and bandsaw. 🤔

Awesome project and engineering, Sadly no-one mass produces these and should cause where i live steel alone might be close to $500 and then there is time + tooling required, where as its cheap to mount a driveshaft to the sprocket or to a jack shaft then run to a diff (which doesn't always work depending on setup). Def not bagging on your project i built designed and built a prototype but sadly one of my suppliers went to another supplier when they didn't have the specific parts in stock (after i told them that supplier had screwed me over and provided low quality parts that weren't up for the task), this ended up with my prototype in pieces and no way to recover the costs so it killed the project. Can also see why people like RPM stopped making them not due to demand but more supplier issues. Thanks for sharing, hopefully you inspire someone to build one for themselves.
