Chris Wall-Palmer in his woodland near the South Downs, making charcaol. Lighting the kiln and getting the burn underway. This time the kiln is mainly full of alder.
For more information and opportunities to meet Chris and learn about charcoal burning or firewood use in stoves and fires check out www.charcoalburners.co.uk were you can find details of our new firewood awareness workshops.

you can also make a retort and burn a fraction of the fuel wood you use to keep the reaction going. The wood being carbonized gives off enough syngas to sustain it's own reaction. A self-fueling gasifier. You can make some moderate modification to your GIANT gasifier and have a self-fueling, clean burning, rocket retort, charcoal maker.

Isn't all the vapor and smoke from charcoal making highly flammable and worth using? And if not wouldn't it be more conscientious to pipe it through a water barrel or another kind of scrubber to attempt to not dump tonnes of crap into the air for no reason?

The greenhouse gasses released when he's making charcoal just replaces the gasses the wood he is burning consumed while it was growing. The tree would eventually die and rot and release the same greenhouse gasses.

What quantity of charcoal would this kiln produce?
@N4trambl1k
@N4trambl1k 12 жыл бұрын
@EzeeSKANKIN Charcoal is produced for a variety of reason. It is lighter than wood. It starts faster and gets to full heat incredibly fast. It creates very little smoke (since all the natural oils have been pushed out of it) and It burns evenly

Interesting video and a bit concerning. The part 4 title image looks like he's on fire, I'm glad it's just the PoV. I'm guessing this is a commercial endeavor versus for privet use? If it was for privet use that one load would take some time to consume (1 to 2 months+)? It looks like he's done this enough that the fire brigade either receives a call from him or they call him to confirm he's processing (I hope the former, not the latter). I wonder how many cords (lbs) of wood goes in that kiln(?) and the amount of charcoal (% or lbs) he gets out? Thank-you for the time and keep safe.

I'm from the middle of the Pacific Ocean - approximately 5000 miles away from California and the nearest coast of Australia - and would like to seek ideas on how to build a kiln. An 8 lb bag of charcoal in my country is roughly $25 usd, but we have all these drift wood laying on the beaches, unused. Your projects are the best I've come across in my KZfaq research. Please help. Thanks.

You could also use the syngas to run a generator and crack water into HHO and store it for future use. Wood vinegar, the liquid residue , is a very valuable agricultural product used in Asia for insecticide and fertilizer. Use this as a template for the general concept. On Picasaweb look for Rockin' Rocket Retort or just google Rockin' Rocket Retort.

Carbon monoxide and -dioxide do not destroy the ozone. You're thinking of Chloroflourocarbons (CFCs) with your comment. It's also important to note that Antartica completely loses the ozone above it EVERY year. Which means that it regenerates completely every year, too.

Refereed this vid to all the crying sooks that complain about the bit of occasional smoke my oil burners put out. This can't be great for ones health. I'm sure no matter how much you tried to avoid it, you'd be sucking in a lot of smoke. I can't seem to get away from it with a camp fire let alone something like this. I'd be putting a big fan up above and to the side of the kiln so it at least tended to go in one direction and I could stand upwind. Don't know how the guy isn't crying like a baby with all that smoke in his eyes. I would be.
