Making the best black powder for use in muzzel loaders. Only for educational purposes- don't try it at home.

That's very interesting. I'm like to see the grinding and filtering process. Reloading powders of all kinds are still available here in the 'States. Percussion caps for reloading are sometimes hard to find..but when I see them, I snatch them up.

the acetone or alcohol used lowers the solubility of the KNO3 in solution, causing most of it to crash out of solution, leaving the remaining water mostly free of the chems. That allows the pressing of the water without losing the KNO3. For those wondering. Basically, this step can be skipped, but it you have to let all the water evap. With that step, you can more agressivly dry it.

this won't nitrate anything will it cus that could explode the gun that's why you can't use nitrocellulose smokeless in a muzzle loader it turns it into a grenade

@@Aaron-zu3xn Are you responding to my comment? I didn't mention "nitrating" anything. Olny speaking about the use of the solvent to ensure the potassium nitrate in solution is pushed out of solution(made solid) so it can be press dried in the cloth without losing some part of it with the water being removed. In any case, potassium nitriate by itself wont nitrate anything without sufficient acid to release it's notronium ion from the potassium for use in nitrating something like cellulose.

@@heathwilliams1489 Acetone is best and faster evaporating, but 91% isopropyl will work. Don't use the 70% as it will take a week to fully evaporate without heat.

The only issue with using alcohol or acetone is it will deactivate the dextrin. Dextrin is not soluble in alcohol or acetone

I mix potassium nitrate and charcoal and sulphur in hit water and simmer down to a gelatinous texture, then transfer the mash to a drip vessel with a ethanol liebig condenser dripping through it to extract the water whilst ensuring a continuos ethanol recycled ethanol drip. I then transfer the new mash to a dehydrator and set at 80 degrees Celsius to evaporate any residual ethanol , the result is completely dehydrated BP

I agree without pucking ( compressing)the grains tend to disintegrate if they are handled too roughly or the ball and patch are rammed home with force....

Here in l'il olde England we call it 'corning'. Either way, as our ancestors discovered back in the very early days of gunpowder, merely mixing the ingredients was not great the individual components settling out during transportation. By controlling the grain size we can control the burn rate.

The cia method is an alternative for peeps without a ballmill and less dangerous than 3 component ball milling. The correct method for stupid fast gunpowder= 2 component milling charcoal and sulphur (which is safer than 3 component) Then dissolve the kno3 in less water the You used,add the ballmilled sulphur/charcoal and cook it. Then use at least 1000ml supercooled isopropanol in a separate pan(i put that pan in the freezer too) and add the hot mix to it (dont add the alcohol to the hot pan)otherways in the mix; crystallization of kno3 WILL occur which you cannot see with the naked eye btw. Larger quantities of iso are preferred to shock and absorb/displace the water content as quickly as possible to prevent crystallization of kno3. Dry as fast as possible again to prevent crystallization of kno3 which is no good. Pressing/pucking is done to commercial powders for reasons of transportability and to prevent the stuf getting to powdery. If you granulate directly after you wring out the alcohol and dry it fast your powder will be waaaaay faster then pucked powder. The only downside is that it is less dense and the granules will get powdery after transportation/shaking.And you need aprox 10 % more then the denser powder. It is definitly faster try it!! Greatings from the Netherlands.

Would recommend an electric hotplate instead of an open flame burner. Along with using wooden utensils and a rubber bowl scraper. As you mentioned. Dried material on the edges and tools can flair up easily. An open flame is an invite for that to happen. It is one of the safest methods to use to make bp, if done safely :)

While the original recipe use 99% alcohol, this is not available in many countries, so you can use acetone instead. The goal of these components is to cool the mix very quickly and also evaporate very quickly.

Never impressed when a video begins with opening a kit that was premade pre measured and pretending to know how. When I make Black Powder step one is cutting the wood that i want to make into the charcoal depending on what the powder is intended for, soft or hard wood. Step two is extracting kno3 from soil. When the need comes around Amazon and kits are not going to be an option. Thanx for being a consumer educating others in being good consumers just the same though.

@@charlescouncill as a Humorist it's always good to see someone laugh. Even when I'm not joking, as is the case here. I completely and firmly believe that if you are going to say that you can do something and try to show others how to do it, you should know how to really do it. Especially if it is something along the lines of survival. Without Amazon to supply ingredients then what use is a recipe? To teach requires a mastery of the subject. So knowing what purpose you're making it for, makes a difference between using a hardwood charcoal vs. soft wood charcoal. If you don't know what difference it makes them you really shouldn't be making it in the first place. Why you do something in a certain way instead of another way is important to know and important to teach. The wrong wood charcoal and your not going to get the optimum performance if it even performs. Rockets and explosives need different density wood charcoal to do the job.

I’m too lazy to even think about going to the trouble to round up manure and urine to make one component; that’s why I stockpile. I make my own charcoal; and have a degree in chemistry.
@shannanhostetler5349

@@charlescouncill round up manure? Brah I make that component the old fashioned way. I avoid anything that requires spending money to get it. When the time comes if you can't source supplies you going to be screwed or calling me Boss while you are working in my kno3 mines! I am fortunate to live on an active volcano and sulfur is not to difficult to come by with a little bit rugged hiking adventure. It would probably be easier to actually source sulfur over on the mainland. I know plenty of places that have sulfur water coming from their well. My degree (one of) is in History and from that I can see a pattern that is occuring and has occurred in the past. Inspired me to learn how to make anything that I will need without having to go to outside sources. Black Powder is one of the minor things considering the other things that I feel are necessary to have. Chemistry degree, maybe you can tell me something about boiling stones. I use broken pieces of Pyrex in my round bottom boiling flask. I'm still having trouble with the bubbles coming in one burst every 30-40 seconds. Tried less then more but it doesn't matter. What the heck is going on and how do I remedy it? My chemistry education comes from Granddads Wonderful Book of Chemistry, if you know anything about the book. Then some comes from that old Cook Book that has such a reputation about it being written by an anarchist. The guy doesn't even understand mol weight so it's just a novelty with some minor ideas that possibly work if you change a few things.

Potassium nitrate is in preserved meat like salami, sulphur is used on grapevines and harmless, and charcoal is in charcoal tablets to calm your stomach. And dextrin is essentially starch. Acetone evaporates quickly, as does alcohol which ypu can drink. What's you ACTUAL point here? Or did you think this was toxic? The only trouble here is using a stove with flames. Should've been electric.
