@@deepayton3021 Thank you.. :) I grew up in Maryland. My father, grandfather and uncles were always using this term as they had all gone through the great depression, and had learned how to take a few different items to create something totally different to meet a new need. They were proud of their ingenuity, and I was proud of them . This skill is all but lost today because there has been a lot of money around to simply buy what you wanted or needed. I would rather have this skill and be creative. It shows a high IQ and a respect for making do. Matt joining the family business once again proves to bring new talents! I remember being told crabapples have a lot more pectin than big apples, and no need to add more. I'm happy to see you putting up even a little jelly for this year. I've enjoyed watching you in years gone by, but this year's priorities were correct - taking care of family first. Those jars are so pretty, the color is like a jewel.

This definitely remind me of about fifty years ago. Someone gave me access to her tree and I got a ton of the little apples. When I got to the juice part, I put the that into ice cream pails and let it cool. Then I put them into the freezer and made my jelly in the winter. Matt was very smart to set up the table for you.

My neighbourhood growing up was full of crabapple trees but we didn’t have one. Our gang of kids used to go raiding crabapples. It was fun and exciting but we never got many apples before a back porch light would be flipped on and we were scolded. Now my Mom did make crabapple jelly and I’ll never forget the pink colour and delicious taste. Good memories. ❤️🇨🇦

Measure your juice out in batches of enough to make a cooking of jelly. Then freeze. This winter all you have to do is thaw the juice out and add the sure jell and sugar. Cook and pour in jars. Then enjoy with your wonderful biscuits.

We have those exact crabapples. They are called Flowering Crabapple trees. We had one in our front yard when I was a kid and Daddy, who drove a school bus, would pick a paper sack full and the kids would eat them up. It got sick and died. Daddy, fortunately, remembered the name and we got another. We, Daddy and me, always make at least one run of jelly and our neighbors and friends do too. It makes the prettiest color of jelly. We cook ours out, we have never used Sure-Jell with it. Not that there is anything wrong with it, it is just how we have always made it before we could afford Sure-Jell. I make my strawberry with it. I have never seen anyone with this particular flowering crabapple tree besides us. LOL I knew it instantly!! Plant you one at your house! We use the whole thing too. We use a pillow case to strain it. We skim it so the jelly is pretty in the jars we do eat what we skim off though. It is delicious too! We do wipe our jars and we do turn them upside down until they are cooled. We lost about half of our apples this year. In February a warm front came through and the apple tree and the blueberries flowered. Then a cold, cold front came through. The apples had not fully flowered so we do have some. We lost all the blueberries, they were loaded down and it was a devastating loss. Blueberry jelly is another one of our favorites (as well as blueberry cobbler).

I have only made crabapple jelly one time . My husband volunteered me to make crabapple jelly for a man that had crabapple trees and give him a jar. He brought home an ice chest full of crabapples and he and my son helped me start on the jelly. The video I watched said to cut them in half and cook them a couple of hours then run them through a strainer. They started out helping them remembered they both had something else to do. I also cooked it without pectin and a lot of sugar . I started at 11 am and finished at 7 pm that evening. I told myself I would never do that again but after seeing the way you did your jelly I might , you make it look easier that way. The elderly man was happy getting his jelly and I told my husband not to volunteer me again. But he knows I like to make all kinds of things from foraged fruits and vegetables.Blessings to you and your family and prayers for Granny.

I am so excited! I have 2 crabapple trees that I have never even thought about making jelly. Your instructions are so clear. The only downside that I have to learning of this new discovery, is that last week I noticed my yard around the trees that are usually covered with crabapples this time of year, were void of crabapples. I had been seeing the crabapples all summer on the trees but, what happened to them..... as I walked around investigating, I found evidence of the crabapple bandits.....deer, probably several large deer from the evidence left. Next year, I will harvest as soon as they start to fall from the trees. One of the trees is right at the corner of my carport, very close to the house. I am shocked that deer came and hung out a while so close to the house. Thank you for sharing this video, I can't wait to try my hand at making crabapple jelly next year!

A little story, my mom use to make crabapple jelly ( about 50 + years ago ) and the skimm’ns were a special treat, we had our own tree. She use to put the cooked apples in an old flour sack and hang it from a hook in the ceiling, just couldn’t barely wait for the jelly to be made. Another way she use to preserve them was pack them in jar, cover them with a simple syrup and add a few cloves. Come winter time open a jar and pop them in your mouth, of course hang onto the stem and gently pull with your teeth, what a treat. That one bread sandwich you had, we called them ‘door shuts’ and still do.

Oh how I enjoyed this video! I love crabapple jelly but have never personally made it myself. That’s why I don’t mind paying local folks who make it cause it’s so good! My mom used to can like you with you with the boiling of the jars. I don’t ever remember her doing any water bath afterwards either. I do remember that she used the old rubber rings that fit on glass tops which were secured with metal screw tops. Pretty old school I guess! She also canned cooked whole crabapples in sugar water with stem, peel and all! They were scrumptious!! I’m like you Tipper, I find such joy in picking and preparing all the incredible plants that God provides for us. We have lots of chokecherry trees where I live in Alberta Canada that make wonderful jelly and syrup as well. I think you call them serviceberries in the US. Anyway, you are certainly inspiring me to get canning so thank you for that!!

Mom-mom put up Concord grape jelly and preserves from the arbor in the back yard, strawberry preserves from the bountiful patch Pop-pop tended, plum preserves from a single tree if it bore enough, quarts and quarts of freestone peach halves, sour red and sweet wax cherries and her silky smooth, perfectly sweetened applesauce from a tree that was already old when they bought the property in 1942. Those peaches, for example, put the store bought canned cling peaches to utter shame. We didn't have much money for frills, but the bounty of fruits and vegetables on Mom-mom shelves in the cellar would fit just fine on any king's table.

My mom who is turning 81 this year gets out and picks blackberries and raspberries that grow wild on our land and she makes lots of jelly every year, she has started to slow down now because she just isn't able to work like she did. She quit having a garden now but some of our friends always brings her sruff from their garden and shares with my mom. Like I've told you before we just live across the mountain from you and we share a lot of the same things as you when it comes to preserving all the stuff from the garden and from the wild. We share the same traditions I find it as we all that live in this area share a lot.

That color is so lovely! I made cherry jelly for the first time this year out of the bumper crop of tiny nanking cherries on our bush.

This is timely. I was given a big box of crab apples in exchange for some work my husband did and I wasn't sure how to make jelly. Thank you!! I am getting up right now to do make some.

I will never forget as a child eating green crab apples when they were green and it sent me running through the fields trying to find a toilet in time lol I didn’t believe the old timers when i was just a kid advising me that if you eat too much green ones you will run to toilet 🤣 oh how I learned my lesson lol. Question 🙋‍♀️ do yall have pawpaw trees in your area? Im from wv but im in southern Maryland now and people think im crazy when I talk about pawpaws

Looks so good Tipper! Your Matt is as handy as a pocket on a shirt, rigging up that cool system for letting them drain! (That's a term my Appalachian Grandpa used to say!" "Well he's as handy as a pocket on a shirt!"

Tipper that white foam was coveted in our family and was put into a bowl to jel. My Granny or my mom would make a fresh pan of biscuits just so we could all enjoy the foam on them. As a mom I did the same for my kids and husband. That crabapple jelly sure looks good!

My crabapple trees are absolutely loaded. I’ve made 8 quarts of juice and two pints of syrup. I also have close to a gallon of apple cider vinegar fermenting. I’ll make jelly this winter. I juiced blackberries and mulberries as well.

Our gardens didn’t “make” and the trees were all decimated by late frost…disappointing but certainly a less heartbreaking reason than what you all have been dealing with. A grad season. Prayers continuing for Granny 💛🙏🏻

I made "Steve's" grape jelly on Monday, and it turned out great. My neighbor has a box of apples for me, so I am going to preserve them and make apple scrap jelly. 😊

Your crabapple jelly looks so good and has a beautiful color. I've only made it once and the crabapples weren't ripe enough so it was very tart. I have however made enough jelly this year to supply a small army, strawberry jam, blue berry jam, blackberry, elderberry, and muscadine. You always inspire me with your cooking /canning videos, thank you.

Thank you for sharing! My husband's coworker gives us crab apple butter every Christmas in Alaska... so hard to grow fruit trees here. We always feel so fortunate of her home gifts. Last weekend of moose season here. Picked a gallon and a half of tundra high Bush blueberries last weekend. Didn't get to pick firewood for jelly this year due to family things as well. Gotta harvest all my potatoes. Got 1st frost. Lol. I don't pull the potatoes until moose season is over. Meat and potatoes 😂 Wish us luck heading out again tomorrow. Love your videos!
