Thanks for sharing the process, lots of good ideas on jigs to hold the stick while working. My technique is slightly different but you are right spending more time hollowing before splitting. If I can recommend anything, have a look at the Arbortech ball gouge, it’s a game changer and safer for hollowing. Your patience shows in the quality, congrats to the owner!!!

Hi John, Your welcome. This technique is fairly new for me that I dreamn't up, I hadn't seen any other maker do part drilling and part splitting before, asceticly I think it looks sweet and makes for a stronger join, I am gonna call it the "U" split method 😉. Many more hours of work but the result is definitely worth it, I haven't tried the arbotech ball gouge yet! I have a mini arbotech pro carving blade but have burnt out the power tool for it, where power tools have there place, I love to use hand tools and hand carve as much as possible, I can be more precise this way.

@@Matt_Makes... the Ball gouge attaches to a regular angle grinder so no need for their expensive power tool. The “U Split” guarantees a more uniform bell, no risk of splitting after joining and more surface for the glue at the joint, I think you may be onto something here. It also increases the surface volume so less chance of uneven drying causing a “banana split” (I just made that up, but you get it.) Copyright that :)

Congrats on a awesome instrument! As a hobbyist maker I look to Matt for inspiration, you couldn’t have picked anyone better to carve a Didge for you.

@@independentmind1977 Hi John this is my second didg from Matt and the quality and sound is just perfect, and just as works of art they are in a class of their own, he is kindly working on a third as we speak, wish I had found him when I started playing but so glad to be on track now🙏
