I just fitted a simple small wooden mouth piece to my didgeridoo and am waiting for the epoxy to arrive in the mail to finish it, I have never used epoxy before so am a bit nervous, but seeing your video has given me some confidence :) Seeing you apply it with gloves is certainly interesting :P is one coat enough? Thanks heaps for your video, it helped a heap!

Perfect instructions. I started practicing your techniques and started understanding and practicing with the lips while I am driving also. But I still don't understand how to do 2 different things in the same time like doing the wobbling groove in the background and the solo in the same time. Would you explain please how to get to that level and what is the secret of doing this, as in the following video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7KUldurtbbTc30.html
@Matt_Makes...
@Matt_Makes... Жыл бұрын
Hi, you have to strip your playing back to basics(and your ego 😉)so you can feel exactly what you are doing when you making any sound so you can replicate the technique on demand at any point, start over with perfecting the drone, circular breathing and perfecting the sweet spot. knowing where you tongue is at all times and using your circular breathing as timing for the base of your rhythms. Break everything down slowly replicate every sound exactly then build up faster and be patient with yourself😉 I teach this on a 1-1 basis.

Do you need an angle grinder? I have some gouge chisels and a knife. Any advice would be great :)
@Matt_Makes...
@Matt_Makes... Жыл бұрын
Hi Tyler, the first ever didge I made for myself I used just the u shaped chisels, but the wood was very soft as it had been over seasoned, so this didn't take me too long. You can use just chisels to make a full didge on a hardwood didge which I have done also, but this is very labour intensive and would take you weeks of hollowing on a large stick. I use the chisels only for the final shaping and the tuning of the instrument now. Good luck with your chisels, be careful with the angle grinder if you use one, most dangerous tool I use other than a chainsaw! You have to watch for kick back, at one point I nearly cut into my artery 😉
@tylerjacob6124
@tylerjacob6124 Жыл бұрын
@@Matt_Makes... Hi Matt, thanks for your reply! The ash branch I have is pretty narrow, so it shouldn’t take too long with chisels hopefully lol. I’ll probably move on to the angle grinder in the future, but I’ll prepare myself a little bit before using it seriously. Wow that’s scary, power tools have no mercy! Thanks again :)

As a chainsaw carver myself, I'll try a higher grit for less tool marks and work down for experiments with different wood species for didgeridoos. I'm going to chisel out the black cherry I acquired. It's going to be rough, but so am I. Bless from New Hampshire.

Thanks for sharing the process, lots of good ideas on jigs to hold the stick while working. My technique is slightly different but you are right spending more time hollowing before splitting. If I can recommend anything, have a look at the Arbortech ball gouge, it’s a game changer and safer for hollowing. Your patience shows in the quality, congrats to the owner!!!
@Matt_Makes...
@Matt_Makes... Жыл бұрын
Hi John, Your welcome. This technique is fairly new for me that I dreamn't up, I hadn't seen any other maker do part drilling and part splitting before, asceticly I think it looks sweet and makes for a stronger join, I am gonna call it the "U" split method 😉. Many more hours of work but the result is definitely worth it, I haven't tried the arbotech ball gouge yet! I have a mini arbotech pro carving blade but have burnt out the power tool for it, where power tools have there place, I love to use hand tools and hand carve as much as possible, I can be more precise this way.
@independentmind1977
@independentmind1977 Жыл бұрын
@@Matt_Makes... the Ball gouge attaches to a regular angle grinder so no need for their expensive power tool. The “U Split” guarantees a more uniform bell, no risk of splitting after joining and more surface for the glue at the joint, I think you may be onto something here. It also increases the surface volume so less chance of uneven drying causing a “banana split” (I just made that up, but you get it.) Copyright that :)

Can you share what glue you are using? I’m a Didge maker from Canada (for personal use) and the best I’ve found so far is an epoxy made by J-B Weld that dries black. It’s an unbelievable bond but it dries black.
@Matt_Makes...
@Matt_Makes... Жыл бұрын
Hi John, I have used various glues over the years, Cascamite, titebond and gorilla glues all do the job well and a lot of them set white or clear. Epoxy is strong you can get clear epoxy and make into glue.
